What arrived at the lab

The dropped external hard drive arrived at our Lincroft lab after it had stopped spinning up. We photographed the device at intake, logged the case, and kept the handling focused on preserving the drive in the state it arrived. A hard drive that has been dropped and will not spin needs a controlled path from the first bench check, because repeated power attempts can make a mechanical problem harder to recover from.

Bench work on the dropped external hard drive

We opened it on the bench, inspected the external enclosure and drive under the scope, and tested the power and connection path without treating the enclosure as the only possible failure point. Dropped external drives that arrive like this usually fall into a few groups: damaged USB bridge electronics, a locked or stalled motor, heads that cannot initialize cleanly, or media damage that prevents the drive from reaching a ready state.

After the lab work established a controlled way forward, we imaged the drive to a healthy drive and worked from that image instead of using the customer device as a live source longer than necessary. For hard drives in this family, the priority was to stabilize access, avoid unnecessary spin cycles, and verify the recovered data from the copy rather than from the damaged original.

What data recovered meant

The outcome was data recovered. In practice, that meant we completed the imaging path, verified the recovered files, and prepared the data to go back to the customer on healthy storage. The customer did not have to accept a recovery until the result was clear under our no data, no charge policy.

If yours looks like this

If your external hard drive was dropped and will not spin up, stop plugging it in, do not shake it, and do not try freezer or pressure tricks. Keep the drive still, leave the enclosure intact if possible, and send it in for lab testing. The 100 diagnostic answered what was recoverable, what the recovery involved, and what the next decision was.

Every case is different. Results depend on the physical condition of your device, so we never promise a percentage or a guaranteed outcome. Diagnosis is a flat $100, applied toward your recovery, and if there is no data recovered, there is no charge.
