Can you recover deleted files? It depends on the device. Hard drives and USB flash drives? Almost always yes. The data's still sitting on the storage medium, waiting to be found. SSDs and iPhones? Almost always no. These devices actively destroy data the second you delete it, and no software or lab can undo that.
It comes down to two things: TRIM and hardware encryption. TRIM-enabled devices (SSDs, iPhones, modern Android phones) erase data blocks right after deletion. Devices without TRIM (hard drives, USB flash drives, SD cards) leave deleted data in place until something writes over it. Why Some Devices Are Recoverable and Others Aren't
Not all storage works the same way. Two technologies decide whether your files are recoverable, and understanding them will save you time, money, and a lot of frustration.
TRIM: The Recovery Killer
TRIM is a command your operating system sends to flash-based storage. When you delete a file, the OS tells the storage controller "these blocks aren't needed anymore," and the controller physically erases them in the background. Gone. Wiped clean. Ready for new data.
Why does TRIM exist? Performance. Flash storage needs to erase blocks before it can write new data to them. Doing that cleanup in the background keeps the device fast. The side effect? Your deleted data is physically destroyed, not just "marked as available."
Devices that use TRIM: internal SSDs, NVMe drives, iPhones, modern Android phones, and some newer external SSDs.
Devices that do NOT use TRIM: hard drives, USB flash drives, SD cards, and most external storage connected via USB.
Encryption: The Second Lock
Some devices pile on a second layer: hardware-level encryption. iPhones encrypt every single file with its own unique AES-256 key. Delete the file, and that key gets destroyed too. Even if TRIM somehow missed the data blocks (it won't), whatever's left is encrypted gibberish with no way to decode it.
Hard drives, USB flash drives, and SD cards typically don't encrypt data at the hardware level. If the raw data's still on the storage medium, we can read it directly. No decryption, no keys to worry about.
The Simple Rule
No TRIM + No Encryption = Recovery is usually possible. This covers hard drives, USB flash drives, and SD cards.
TRIM + Encryption = Recovery is virtually impossible. This covers iPhones, modern Android phones, and internal SSDs.
TRIM + No Encryption = Recovery is still extremely unlikely. This covers most consumer SSDs. Even without encryption, TRIM erases the data so fast that there's usually nothing left to recover.
Hard Drives: The Best Case for Recovery
Traditional spinning hard drives (HDDs) are the best-case scenario for data recovery. This is what we do at MDrepairs every single day.
Hard drives store data on spinning magnetic platters. Delete a file and the operating system just marks that space as "available" in the file system table. Your actual data? Still sitting on the platters, completely untouched, until the drive happens to write something new in that exact spot. On a drive that isn't heavily used, deleted files can stick around for weeks, months, sometimes years.
That's why hard drive data recovery works so well. We read the platters directly, scan for file signatures, and piece deleted files back together from the raw data. Corrupted file system? Formatted drive? Won't spin up? Doesn't matter. The data is usually still physically there.
Hard drives don't use TRIM. They don't encrypt individual files. When you delete something, it stays on the platters until overwritten. That's why recovery rates for HDDs are so much higher than any other device type.

SSDs: The Worst Case
SSDs are the exact opposite of hard drives when it comes to recovery. Deleted files from an internal SSD? Your chances of getting them back are basically zero.
TRIM is the reason. Every modern OS (Windows 10/11, macOS, Linux) sends TRIM commands to SSDs by default. The second you delete a file, the OS tells the SSD controller to erase those data blocks. Garbage collection wipes them clean, usually within seconds. By the time you even think about recovery, the data is already physically gone from the NAND flash chips.
There are a few narrow exceptions. TRIM was manually disabled (almost nobody does this). You're running some ancient OS that doesn't support TRIM. Or you caught the deletion within seconds and immediately yanked the power. In those rare cases, garbage collection might not have finished yet. But realistically? Don't count on it.
One other edge case: external SSDs connected via USB sometimes don't receive TRIM commands because the USB enclosure doesn't pass them through. Recovery might be possible in that scenario, but it depends on the enclosure's firmware.

USB Flash Drives: Good News
This is where things get surprisingly good. USB flash drives use flash memory (same basic tech as SSDs), but they're almost always recoverable after deletion.
Here's why: the USB protocol doesn't pass TRIM commands in most configurations. When you delete a file from a USB flash drive, the OS marks the space as available in the file system but does NOT tell the controller to erase the underlying blocks. Your data just sits there, same as it would on a hard drive.
Recovery software can scan the drive, find deleted file signatures, and piece your files back together. Success rates are excellent. We're talking 90%+ if you haven't written much new data since the deletion.
The one risk? Overwriting. Flash drives are small and people reuse them constantly, so new data can wipe out deleted files fast. The sooner you stop using the drive after realizing files are missing, the better.

SD Cards: Great News for Photographers
SD cards might be the single best device type for data recovery. Everything works in your favor: no TRIM, simple file systems (usually FAT32 or exFAT), and predictable data layouts.
When a camera or phone deletes photos from an SD card, the file system just removes the directory entry. The actual image data stays exactly where it was. JPEG and RAW files have distinctive header signatures that recovery software picks up easily, even without an intact file system.
Accidentally formatted your SD card? You can almost always get everything back. A "quick format" only erases the file system table, not the actual photos. A full format does overwrite data, but most cameras and computers default to quick format anyway.

iPhones: Encryption Makes It Impossible
iPhones are the hardest case we deal with. If you permanently deleted files (past the 30-day Recently Deleted window) and don't have an iCloud or iTunes backup, that data is gone. No lab, no software, no government agency is getting it back.
Two things kill you here. First, iPhones use TRIM on their internal NAND flash, so data blocks get physically erased the moment files are permanently deleted. Second, every file is individually encrypted with AES-256 via the Secure Enclave processor. Delete the file and its unique encryption key gets destroyed too. Even if TRIM somehow missed the blocks, whatever's left is scrambled beyond any possibility of decryption.
The saving grace is Apple's built-in safety nets. Recently Deleted gives you 30 days. iCloud Photos syncs to the cloud. iCloud Backup runs nightly. What About Android Phones?
Android is a mixed bag. It ranges from "difficult" to "impossible" depending on the age and model.
Modern Android phones (2018 and newer): Most recent devices use file-based encryption and TRIM, just like iPhones. Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, OnePlus, all the major brands encrypt internal storage by default. Recovering permanently deleted files from these phones is extremely unlikely. Same reasons as iPhone: TRIM erases the blocks and encryption makes anything left unreadable.
Older Android phones (pre-2018): Some of these didn't have full-disk encryption on by default, and some didn't run TRIM as aggressively. In rare cases, "chip-off recovery" can work. That means physically removing the NAND flash chip from the phone's circuit board and reading it with specialized equipment. It's expensive, slow, and only works on unencrypted devices. But it's at least theoretically possible.
SD card in an Android phone: If your phone has a removable SD card and your files were stored on it (not internal storage), recovery is much more likely. SD cards don't use TRIM and aren't encrypted by default. Pull the card out, put it in a computer, and follow our SD card recovery guide.
What About NAS Devices and RAID Arrays?
NAS devices and RAID arrays are a different animal. Most consumer NAS units (Synology, QNAP, Western Digital) run traditional hard drives internally, which means deleted file recovery is often possible. The drives inside don't use TRIM, and data stays on the platters just like any other HDD.
Where it gets complicated is the array configuration. RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, they all split data across multiple drives differently. Recovering deleted files from a RAID array means understanding the specific stripe size, parity layout, and drive order. This is almost always a professional job, not something consumer software can handle.

The Universal Rule: Stop Using the Device
For every device type where recovery is possible (hard drives, USB flash drives, SD cards), one rule matters more than anything: stop using the device immediately.
When you delete a file, the space it occupied gets marked as "available." The data's still there, but the device now considers that space fair game for new writes. Everything you do after deletion risks overwriting your files:
- Saving a new file could overwrite deleted data
- Installing recovery software TO the same drive could overwrite the files you're trying to recover
- Even just browsing the internet writes temporary files to the drive
- Windows and macOS constantly write log files, thumbnails, and temporary data in the background
What to Do Right Now
1 Stop using the device
If it's an external drive, USB drive, or SD card: unplug it. If it's your computer's internal drive: shut down the computer. The less you use the device, the better your chances.
2 Don't save anything to the drive
Do not download files, install software, or do anything that writes data to the affected storage device. Every write operation is a potential overwrite of your deleted files.
3 Use a different device to research your options
Read this guide on your phone if the affected device is your computer. Read it on your computer if the affected device is an external drive. Keep the affected device powered off and disconnected.

Why can hard drive data be recovered but not SSD data?
Hard drives store data on spinning magnetic platters. Delete a file and the HDD just marks that space as available. The magnetic patterns representing your data stay on the platters until something physically overwrites them. SSDs are completely different. They store data on NAND flash chips and use TRIM to pre-erase blocks in the background. Delete a file from an SSD and the controller zeros out those blocks within seconds. The data isn't "marked" as deleted. It's genuinely wiped clean. Two totally different technologies, two totally different outcomes.
Can I recover photos I deleted from my phone?
Check your Recently Deleted folder first. Both iPhones and Android phones keep deleted photos for 30 days, and you can restore them instantly from there. Also check cloud services: iCloud Photos, Google Photos, Dropbox, whatever you use. If the photos aren't in any of those places, it comes down to your phone type. iPhone: not recoverable (encryption + TRIM). Android with a removable SD card: the SD card may be recoverable. Android internal storage: unlikely on any modern encrypted device.
What should I do first when I realize files are deleted?
Stop using the device. Right now. This is the single most important thing you can do. Every new write to the storage device risks overwriting your deleted files. Unplug external drives.
