A bad fall can also dislodge the battery connector or fracture trace lines on the board. If the phone won't turn on after a drop, don't keep trying to power it. Get it to a lab.

Note how every row that goes from "good" to "none" is about encryption, not physical damage. That's the whole story on modern Samsung. Physical damage is fixable. Lost encryption keys are not.
Why Knox Makes Chip-Off Harder Than It Used to Be
If you talked to a recovery lab in 2014 about Samsung data recovery, they might have said something like: "If it's bricked, we just unsolder the storage chip and read it directly." That was true then. Samsung phones from that era had user data sitting in plaintext on the eMMC chip, with maybe a thin layer of encryption that the lab could bypass.
That world is gone. Starting around 2017, Samsung began tying all on-device data to keys stored in a Trusted Execution Environment, and later in dedicated Knox Vault hardware. The S25 has the most current version of this stack. Practically speaking:
- The UFS chip stores ciphertext, not plaintext
- The decryption key lives inside Knox Vault
- The screen lock unlocks the key
- Without the lock, the key never comes out
- Without the key, the UFS data is high-entropy garbage
So chip-off works in the sense that we can pull the chip and read its raw contents. It does not work in the sense that the raw contents are useful. They're encrypted and decryption requires either the screen lock or a hardware exploit that's only practical for nation-state actors. We don't oversell. If a lab promises you Samsung chip-off recovery without your screen lock, ask very specific questions.
What NOT to Do Right Now
This list is short, specific, and matters. Each of these moves can lose data permanently.
- Factory reset the phone. This regenerates the encryption keys. Old data on the chip becomes unreadable, even if it's technically still there.
- Flash a new firmware with Odin or Samsung's Smart Switch. A bad flash can wipe the userdata partition or corrupt the Knox state.
- Let a carrier store "send it in for warranty service." Samsung will wipe it. Always.
- Trigger Find My Mobile remote erase. If you accidentally left a remote erase queued, log into findmymobile.samsung.com and cancel it now.
- Put it in rice if it took a splash. Rice does nothing useful and lets corrosion build up.
- Keep hammering the power button. If three force-restart attempts don't work, stop. You're not going to brute-force a boot loop.
- Open it yourself. The S25 Ultra is glued and torx-screwed. Without heat plates and the right opening picks, you'll crack glass and rip ribbon cables.
Safe Things You Can Try First
None of these wipe data. Try them in order. If one works, great. If not, you're at the lab stage.
Hold the Side button and Volume Down together for 10 to 15 seconds. The phone should vibrate and the Samsung logo should appear. If you get to the logo and it sticks there, that's a separate problem (see boot loop section).
Plug into a Samsung-branded wall adapter (or any USB-C PD adapter rated 25W+) using a known good cable. Leave for 30 minutes. Don't touch it. Then try Step 1 again.
Shine a phone light into the USB-C port. Look for lint, pocket fuzz, or anything blocking the contacts. Use a wooden toothpick or plastic SIM ejector to gently lift out debris. Never metal. Never poke hard.
With the phone powered off, hold Side and Volume Up while plugging into a computer with a USB-C cable. If the Samsung Android Recovery menu appears, your bootloader and Knox state are intact. Don't tap "Wipe data" under any circumstances. Just confirm the menu appears, then highlight "Reboot system now" and press the Side button.
If the phone reaches the lock screen but is otherwise unusable, plug it into a computer running Samsung Smart Switch. Smart Switch can sometimes pull off a backup from a partially working phone. Do NOT click any "Repair" or "Reset" option in Smart Switch.
If none of these worked, the phone has either logic board damage, an encryption state problem, or storage issues that need lab tools. The good news is that "needs lab" doesn't mean "data is lost." It just means the next steps require a microscope, hot air, and time.
Common Recovery Scenarios on the S25
Most S25 cases at the lab break down into these patterns.
Scenario 1: Won't Turn On at All
You press the power button. Nothing. No vibration. No screen flicker. No charging icon when plugged in. This usually points to a battery connector, a PMIC failure, or a damaged power-line trace. We bench-power the phone to isolate the issue, then replace or rework whichever component failed. Once the phone can reach the lock screen, extraction follows the normal path.
Scenario 2: Samsung Logo Loops Forever
The phone gets to the Samsung logo, then reboots, then reaches the logo again. Endlessly. This is almost always a software issue. We can sometimes flash a stock firmware in Odin without wiping userdata, but it's risky on the S25 because the bootloader is locked tight by Knox. The safer path is to use a service-tool firmware mode to read the data without flashing.
Scenario 3: Cracked Screen, Phone is Alive
Phone vibrates when you press buttons but you can't see anything. Audio plays. Maybe it rings when you call it. This is the easiest scenario. We swap in a working display assembly long enough to authenticate with your lock and pull data. The original screen doesn't have to be permanently repaired.
Scenario 4: Water Damage With Visible Corrosion
You opened the phone or had someone else open it, and there's white or green crust around the board. Corrosion. This is the hard category. If the UFS chip is physically intact, we can sometimes desolder it and read it directly. With Knox, the keys are needed too, which we can only retrieve if the SoC and Knox Vault chip are also intact. The S25 series is Samsung's first really AI-forward flagship. A lot of Galaxy AI features run on the device rather than in the cloud, which is great for privacy and battery, but it creates a wrinkle for recovery.

Once a quarter, open Settings > Battery and device care > Storage. If you're above 90% full, clean out old downloads, big videos, and apps you don't use. Phones at the storage edge are more prone to update failures.
Update on Wi-Fi With the Battery Above 50%
Don't update over cellular with a dying battery. Plug in, get to good Wi-Fi, then update. The partial-update scenario is the #1 cause of post-update bricks across every Android we recover.
Skip the One UI Beta Program
Samsung's beta program is fun. It's also a known way to brick your phone. If you must run beta firmware, do it on a backup phone, not your daily driver.
