Your computer won't turn on. Maybe it's a laptop that powered down mid-use and won't come back, a desktop that doesn't beep when you press the power button, or a MacBook that's just a black screen with no chime. Before you bring it to a repair shop, you need to know one thing. Most "won't turn on" failures don't kill your data. The drive is usually fine. The data is sitting right there. But the way most repair shops diagnose and fix a dead machine can erase that data permanently, and they aren't always honest about that risk on the intake form.
Best Buy and Geek Squad make you sign a waiver that explicitly says they aren't responsible for data loss. Apple replaces logic boards on M1, M2, M3, and M4 Macs (which have the storage soldered to those boards), so swapping the board swaps your data into the trash. Independent repair shops sometimes "test" with a factory reset to see if the OS is corrupted. None of this is malicious. It's just how repair workflows handle uncooperative machines. The fix: get your data out first, then send the machine to a repair shop with the data already safe. This guide explains how.

Repair shops fix computers. Data recovery labs read data off failed storage. Those are different jobs with different tools and different goals. The problem is that most people don't know the difference until after their data is gone.
Here's how a typical repair shop diagnoses a dead computer. They power-cycle it a few times. They check the AC adapter and battery. If those look fine, they pull the drive, plug it into a known-working machine, and see if it boots. If it does boot, the drive is fine and the problem is in the host machine. If it doesn't boot, they often run a factory reset on the drive, because in their world, a non-booting drive is a corrupted OS that needs to be wiped and reinstalled. That factory reset is the moment your photos disappear.

Best Buy's Geek Squad makes you sign a service agreement that includes language like "Geek Squad is not responsible for any loss of data" right on the intake form. Apple's Genius Bar service agreement says the same. Independent shops vary, but most either include similar language or just don't talk about data unless you bring it up. None of this is hidden, but most customers skim and sign because they want the computer working again. The reality: the moment the repair shop opens the case, your data is at risk, and once they begin diagnostics, that risk increases sharply.
This isn't a knock on repair shops. They do their job well. Their job is to make the machine work again. If your data is on the drive and the drive is healthy, they'll often get it back to you intact. But "often" is not the same as "always." And on machines with soldered storage, where the repair fix is "replace the logic board," your data is gone the second they hit go.
The 5 categories of "won't turn on"
Computers fail to power on for five main reasons. Four of them have nothing to do with the drive, which means your data is sitting there waiting to be pulled. The fifth is drive failure itself, which is a recoverable problem but requires a data recovery lab rather than a repair shop.

Pay attention to which one matches your machine. If you hear fans spinning and the keyboard backlight comes on, your machine is alive. The drive is almost certainly fine. The problem is somewhere else. Repair shops handle these cases routinely without touching your data, but only if they don't decide to "diagnose" by reformatting the drive.
The case where this distinction matters most: power supply or motherboard failures on machines with soldered storage. The repair fix on those is "replace the logic board," and the data goes with the old board into a recycling bin. On those machines specifically, you need to extract the data before you authorize any repair work.
Soldered storage: the M-series Mac problem
This is the part most customers don't know until it's too late. Modern Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4 models from 2020 onward) have their storage soldered directly to the logic board. The NAND flash chips that hold your files are not a removable drive. They're attached components, just like the CPU or RAM. When Apple replaces a logic board, the storage goes with it.
This means: if your M-series Mac won't turn on because of a logic board issue, and Apple's fix is "replace the board," they are not transferring your data. They're handing you a working Mac with a new, empty board, and the old board with your photos goes into Apple's recycling pipeline. You sign the agreement, you walk out, and your data is on a board that's about to be destroyed.
The same architecture applies to Microsoft Surface laptops (Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, Surface Go), recent HP and Lenovo ultrabooks with soldered eMMC, almost all Chromebooks, and Google Pixelbook devices. Anywhere "soldered storage" appears in the spec sheet, the data lives on the board, not on a removable drive.
Apple's Data Migration Tool that the Genius Bar uses requires the machine to boot. If it won't boot, they can't run it. The data isn't accessible to them. They will tell you, honestly, that they cannot recover the data. What they will not tell you is that a specialty lab can sometimes pull the data off the board directly by reading the soldered NAND chips through a process called chip-off or direct NAND access. We can do this. They cannot.
For older Intel-based Macs (pre-2020), it depends on the model. Most Intel MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2016 onward also had soldered storage. The 2013-2015 MacBook Air and Pro models had removable PCIe SSDs that could be pulled out and read. Check the model year and look up the storage configuration before you assume.
Your three options for getting data out
You have three paths to safely extract data from a dead computer before sending it for repair. Pick the one that fits your machine and your comfort level.
Option 1: Pull the drive yourself (legacy SATA machines only)
This works on older laptops and most desktops that use a removable 2.5-inch SATA drive or a removable M.2 NVMe SSD. If you can find a service manual that shows you opening the case and unplugging the drive, you can do this at home.
You'll need a screwdriver, a USB enclosure or SATA-to-USB cable that fits your drive type, and a working computer to plug the drive into. Once you have the drive out, plug it into the working machine. If it shows up, copy your files. If it doesn't show up, the drive is the problem and you need a recovery lab.
This option is realistic for most desktops, ThinkPads, and older MacBook Pro models (2012 and earlier, also 2013-2015 with PCIe SSDs). It is not realistic for modern MacBook Air, MacBook Pro from 2016, M-series Macs, Surface laptops, or most modern ultrabooks. If you're not sure, look up the model number and check whether the storage is removable.
Option 2: Ship the whole machine to a data recovery lab
If the storage is soldered, or if you don't want to risk opening the case yourself, ship the whole computer to a recovery lab. We open it in our shop, extract the data using the right tools for that specific architecture, and ship you back an external drive with all your files. You can then send the original machine for repair without worrying about data loss.

This is the workflow for M-series Macs, Surface devices, soldered-storage HP and Lenovo laptops, and anything with no removable drive. This is the only path on soldered-storage devices that won't turn on.
Option 3: Have a recovery lab open the machine before sending for repair
Some customers want the repair done at a specific shop (Apple, a warranty center, etc.) but want the data secured first. For these cases, you send the machine to us, we extract the data and ship you an external drive with everything, and then you forward the now-data-safe machine to the repair shop for whatever they're doing. The repair shop can do whatever they need to do (board swap, format, factory reset) and you don't lose anything.
This is the safest pattern for anyone who has irreplaceable data and a machine that needs warranty repair. The repair shop never has to deal with data, and you never have to worry about what they did to it.
DIY check before you ship anywhere
Before you ship the machine anywhere (repair shop or recovery lab), spend 10 minutes ruling out the obvious. Most "won't turn on" cases turn out to be one of these basic issues. If any of these fix it, great. If none do, you've narrowed the problem and you know it's worth a closer look.
1. Try a different power adapter or cable
Dead chargers and frayed cables are the #1 cause of "won't turn on" calls. If you have a friend with the same machine type, borrow their charger. For USB-C laptops, try a known-good high-wattage USB-C charger and cable. For desktops, try a different wall outlet first.
2. Hold the power button for 30 seconds
On laptops, this drains residual capacitor charge that sometimes locks the machine into a no-boot state. Unplug the charger, remove the battery if removable, hold power for 30 seconds, then plug back in and try again. This sometimes resurrects an unresponsive laptop. Free, takes a minute.
3. SMC and NVRAM reset on Intel Macs
Intel Macs have SMC (System Management Controller) and NVRAM resets that can clear bad firmware states. Look up the exact key combination for your specific Mac model on Apple Support. M-series Macs don't have an SMC reset, but they do reset themselves automatically with a 30-second hold of the power button.
4. Listen for fan or hard drive sounds
Put your ear next to the machine and press power. Do the fans spin even briefly? Does a hard drive (in non-SSD machines) make any spin-up sound? If yes, the power is reaching the components and the problem is somewhere downstream. If nothing happens at all, the power supply or motherboard is your culprit.
5. Try external display (for laptops)
Plug a known-good external monitor into the HDMI or USB-C output. If the machine boots and you see Windows or macOS on the external display, the internal screen is dead but everything else works. You can copy your data to a USB drive at that point without involving any repair shop.
If you've done all five and the machine is still completely unresponsive, you've ruled out the easy stuff. Time to make a decision about where to send it. If the data on it is critical, send it to a recovery lab first. If the data is replaceable and you just want it working, send it to a repair shop.

Step 2: Ship the whole machine

Step 3: Diagnosis (24 to 48 hours)
When the machine arrives, we open it, check the drive type, check the board, and figure out exactly why it won't power on. We tell you what we found, give you a firm quote for the data extraction, and explain whether the machine itself can be revived or just needs to go to a repair shop after the data is out.
Step 4: Data extraction
For removable drives, we pull the drive and image it on our workstations. For soldered storage, we either coax the board into a temporary working state long enough to image the storage, or we read the NAND chips directly using chip-off tools. Most cases finish within three to seven business days.

FAQ
My computer won't turn on. Will the repair shop save my data?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and they usually won't tell you which case you're in until after you've signed the intake form. Most repair shops are not data recovery labs. If their diagnostic involves a factory reset or a logic board swap, your data is lost. The safest pattern is to send the machine to a recovery lab first, get the data out, and then send the now-data-safe machine for repair.
Is my data still on my computer if it won't turn on?
Usually yes. About four out of five "won't turn on" cases are problems with the power supply, motherboard, RAM, or screen. None of those touch the storage. The data is sitting there waiting to be read. The other case (one out of five) is drive failure itself, which is also recoverable but requires a specialty lab rather than a repair shop.
Does Apple recover data from a dead Mac?
No. Apple's Genius Bar can do a "Data Migration" if the machine boots, but if your Mac won't turn on, they can't run their migration tool. They will tell you the data is gone, and on M-series Macs with soldered storage, if they replace the logic board, the data is physically destroyed with the discarded board. A specialty lab can read the soldered NAND chips directly. We handle these regularly.
Will Best Buy or Geek Squad lose my data?
They might. Geek Squad's service agreement explicitly waives liability for data loss. If they wipe the drive as part of diagnostics or warranty processing, your data is gone and they're not on the hook for it. If your data is irreplaceable, do not bring a dead computer to Best Buy without extracting the data first.
What if my computer has soldered storage like an M-series Mac?
You have to ship the whole machine to a recovery lab. You cannot pull the storage out separately because it's part of the logic board. We open the case, read the NAND chips through the logic board, decrypt the data if the encryption keys are intact, and image everything. Soldered storage recoveries are more complex but routine. Do not let Apple, Best Buy, or any repair shop replace the logic board before the data is out.

Can I pull the hard drive out myself?
On most desktops and older laptops with SATA or M.2 drives, yes. You'll need a screwdriver, a USB enclosure, and a working computer to read it. Stop trying to power it on after a spill. Every retry adds more damage.
Can I send my computer to you and have you ship it on to Apple for repair?

You ship the machine to us, we extract the data and send you an external drive, and then we forward the machine to whatever Apple Store or service center you specify. What if my computer was dropped? Is the data gone?
Usually not. Drops most often cause physical damage to the chassis, screen, or board connectors, not the storage itself. SSDs in particular are very impact-resistant because they have no moving parts. Spinning hard drives can suffer head crashes from drops, but those are still recoverable in a cleanroom. Don't keep trying to turn it on after a drop. Every power-on adds risk to a recoverable situation.
