What You'll Need (Hardware)
Before you start taking things apart, grab these items. You'll need at least one of them depending on what type of drive your dead computer has:
For SATA Drives (2.5" or 3.5" HDD or SSD)
- USB-to-SATA adapter cable ($10-15 on Amazon). This is the simplest option. It's a cable with USB on one end and a SATA connector on the other. Plug the drive in, plug the USB into your new computer, done. Get one that supports both 2.5" and 3.5" drives (3.5" drives need an external power adapter, which some cables include).
- External drive enclosure ($12-20). An enclosure is a case that turns your internal drive into a permanent external drive. Insert the drive, close the enclosure, and connect via USB. Good option if you want to keep using the old drive as external storage. Just remember to always safely eject the drive before disconnecting it.
- SATA dock ($20-30). A dock sits on your desk and lets you slot drives in from the top, like a toaster. Great if you work with multiple drives regularly.
For M.2 NVMe SSDs
- M.2 NVMe USB enclosure ($15-25). These are small enclosures specifically designed for M.2 NVMe drives. Make sure you get one that matches your drive's key type (most modern NVMe drives are M-key). The enclosure connects to your new computer via USB-C or USB-A.
For M.2 SATA SSDs
- M.2 SATA USB enclosure ($12-20). Looks similar to the NVMe version but uses a different protocol. M.2 SATA drives are B+M keyed. Make sure the enclosure explicitly says "SATA" and not "NVMe." They're not interchangeable.
Tools for Opening the Computer

How to Identify Your Drive Type
Before you buy an adapter, you need to know what type of drive your dead computer has. Here's how to figure it out:

By Looking at the Drive
If you can see the drive, identifying it is easy:
- 3.5" SATA HDD: Big, heavy, metal box about the size of a paperback book. Has a flat SATA data connector and a wider SATA power connector on one end.
- 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD: Smaller, about the size of a smartphone. Same connectors as 3.5" but physically smaller. Most laptop drives are this size.
- M.2 SSD: Looks like a stick of gum. Small circuit board, about 22mm wide and 42-80mm long. Plugs into an M.2 slot on the motherboard. No cables.
Removing a Drive from a Desktop PC
Desktop drives are the easiest to remove. Usually takes 5 minutes.
1 Unplug Everything
Unplug the power cable from the back of the computer. Unplug any other cables. Press the power button once (with the cable unplugged) to discharge any remaining electricity in the system.
2 Open the Side Panel
Remove the screws (usually 2 thumbscrews or Phillips screws) on the back of the case that hold the side panel. Slide the panel off. On most cases, the drives are visible near the front of the case in a drive bay or cage.
3 Disconnect the Drive
You'll see two cables connected to the drive: a flat data cable (SATA) and a wider power cable. Gently pull both connectors straight out. They should slide out easily. Don't yank or twist.
4 Remove the Drive
The drive is usually held in place by screws on the sides or a tool-less caddy/bracket system. Remove the screws or slide the release mechanism, and the drive lifts right out. If it's an M.2 SSD, it'll be on the motherboard itself, held by a single small screw.
Removing a Drive from a Laptop
Laptop drives are a bit trickier because every laptop is designed differently. The process varies by manufacturer and model.
Laptops with Easy Drive Access
Some laptops (especially older ones and business-class laptops like ThinkPads) have a dedicated drive access panel on the bottom. You remove one or two screws, pop off a small panel, and the drive slides right out. Check if your laptop has a panel with a hard drive icon on it.
Laptops That Require Full Disassembly
Many modern laptops (especially ultrabooks) require removing the entire bottom panel to access the drive. This usually means:

Search YouTube or iFixit for "[your laptop model] SSD replacement" or "hard drive removal." Watch the whole video before you start. Every laptop is different, and knowing what to expect prevents broken clips and stripped screws.
2 Remove the Bottom Panel
Remove all screws from the bottom of the laptop. They're often different lengths, so keep track of which screw came from which hole (a magnetic mat or piece of tape with labels works great). Use a plastic spudger to carefully pry the bottom panel off starting from a corner. It's usually held by clips that release with gentle pressure.
3 Locate and Remove the Drive
Look for the storage drive. In older laptops, it's a 2.5" drive connected via SATA cable or plugged into a SATA connector on the motherboard. In newer laptops, it's an M.2 SSD stick. Remove the mounting screw, disconnect any cables, and slide the drive out.
Getting Data Off a Dead Mac
Macs are trickier than PCs for a few reasons. Here's what you need to know for each type:
Older MacBooks (Pre-2016) and iMacs
These have removable SATA drives (HDDs or SSDs). The process is similar to any laptop: remove the back panel (MacBooks use Pentalobe screws, which need a special screwdriver), locate the drive, and remove it. iFixit has excellent teardown guides for every Mac model.
MacBook Pro 2016-2017 (with removable SSD)
These models have a proprietary Apple SSD that isn't standard M.2. You'll need a specific Apple SSD to USB adapter. Search for "MacBook Pro 2016 SSD adapter" on Amazon. They're about $15-25.
MacBook Pro/Air 2018+ and Recent iMacs
Bad news: the storage on these machines is soldered to the motherboard. You can't remove it. On Intel Macs, you might be able to use Target Disk Mode (hold T during startup) to access the drive from another Mac, but if the computer is truly dead, this won't work either. On Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and later), even Target Disk Mode isn't available. You'll need to use Apple Configurator 2 on another Mac to attempt DFU-based data transfer, and that requires the dead Mac's logic board to at least partially function.
Mac Mini and Mac Pro
Mac Mini (2018+) has a soldered SSD. Mac Pro (2019) has removable NVMe SSDs in a proprietary Apple module format. Earlier Mac Minis and Mac Pros have standard SATA drives that can be removed normally.
Connecting the Old Drive to Your New Computer
You've got the drive out. Now let's connect it to your new computer.
1 Connect the Adapter
Plug the old drive into your USB-to-SATA adapter, M.2 enclosure, or dock. Then plug the USB end into your new computer. For 3.5" desktop HDDs, make sure the power adapter is connected too (they need external power that USB alone can't provide).
2 Wait for Detection
Give your computer a minute to detect the drive. On Windows, it should appear in File Explorer under "This PC" with its own drive letter. On Mac, the drive icon should appear on your desktop or in Finder's sidebar. If the drive has multiple partitions, you might see more than one.
3 Navigate to Your Files
On a Windows drive, your files are typically at: [Drive Letter]:Users[YourUsername]. Look in Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, Videos, and Music folders. On a Mac drive, they're at: /Users/[YourUsername]/ in the same standard folders.
4 Copy Everything You Need
Drag and drop (or copy/paste) files from the old drive to your new computer's internal drive, an external backup drive, or cloud storage. Start with the most important files (irreplaceable photos, documents) first, then work through the rest.
What Files to Copy (and Where to Find Them)
Don't just randomly browse folders. Here's a systematic checklist of everything worth copying:

Stuff You DON'T Need to Copy
- Windows system files (C:Windows). You'll install a fresh OS on the new computer.
- Program Files. Applications need to be reinstalled. Copying the program folder won't work because they need registry entries and dependencies.
- Temp files (C:UsersNameAppDataLocalTemp). Just junk.
- Pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys. System files. Useless on a new machine.
What About Applications and Settings?
You can't just copy applications from one computer to another. They need to be reinstalled fresh on the new machine. But you can save a lot of setup time by knowing what to grab from the old drive:
Browser Data
If you use Chrome and sign in with a Google account, all your bookmarks, passwords, and extensions sync automatically. Just sign into Chrome on the new computer. Same goes for Firefox with a Firefox account. If you don't use browser sync, copy the entire browser profile folder from AppData and paste it into the same location on the new computer (after installing the browser).
If you use Outlook with POP3 (mail is stored locally), you need to copy the PST file. If you use IMAP or Exchange (mail is stored on the server), just set up the account on the new computer and all your email will download from the server.
License Keys
Before installing software on the new computer, make sure you have license keys for any paid software. Tools like ProduKey or Belarc Advisor can scan the old drive and extract product keys for Windows, Office, and other installed software. You'll need to run these tools by booting from the old drive (if possible) or using their offline scanning features.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
Drive Not Showing Up When Connected
If you connect the old drive via USB and nothing happens:
- Check Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac). The drive might be detected but not assigned a drive letter. In Disk Management (right-click Start > Disk Management), look for the drive listed without a letter. Right-click the partition and choose "Change Drive Letter."
- Try a different USB port. Preferably a USB 3.0 port directly on the computer (not through a hub).
- Try a different cable/adapter. Cheap USB-to-SATA adapters can be unreliable.
- For 3.5" drives, check the power. 3.5" desktop HDDs need 12V power that USB can't provide. Make sure the adapter's power supply is connected and plugged in.
- Listen to the drive. If it's an HDD, does it spin up? Click? Make any noise? A drive that doesn't spin at all might have a motor or PCB issue. A clicking drive has a mechanical problem. Both need professional help.
Drive Shows Up But Says "Access Denied"
This happens when the files on the old drive are owned by a different Windows user account. You need to take ownership:
Taking Ownership (Windows)
Right-click the folder you can't access > Properties > Security tab > Advanced > Change (next to Owner) > type your username > Check Names > OK > check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" > Apply. This grants your current account access to the files.
Drive Shows Up as "RAW" or Asks to Format
Don't format it. The file system might be slightly corrupted. Try running chkdsk [drive letter]: /f in Command Prompt (as administrator). If that doesn't work, professional data recovery can usually recover everything from a RAW drive.
BitLocker or FileVault Encrypted
If the old drive was encrypted with BitLocker (Windows) or FileVault (Mac), you'll need the encryption password or recovery key to access it. For BitLocker, check your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com. For FileVault, you need the account password or the recovery key that was generated when FileVault was enabled.
When You Need Professional Help
Most dead-computer data transfers are DIY-friendly. But some situations require professional data recovery:
- The drive makes clicking, grinding, or beeping sounds when you connect it. This is mechanical failure. Don't keep trying. Power it down and call a lab.
- The drive isn't detected by any computer via USB adapter. The drive's electronics or firmware may have failed. Needs professional diagnosis.
- Mac with soldered storage (2018+ MacBook, recent Mac Mini). If the computer is completely dead and storage is soldered, professional board-level repair might be needed to access the data.
- Encrypted drive with no password or recovery key. If the drive is BitLocker or FileVault encrypted and you can't find the key, a professional can help in some specific scenarios but not all.
- Multiple drives in a RAID array. If the dead computer was a server or workstation with RAID, don't try to figure it out yourself. RAID reconstruction requires specialized knowledge and tools.

Can I just put my old hard drive into my new computer?
Physically, yes, if the connectors match. But you probably shouldn't use it as your boot drive. Your old Windows installation won't work properly on different hardware (different chipset, different drivers). Install a fresh OS on your new computer's drive, then connect the old drive as a secondary drive to copy files from it. Or use a USB adapter to connect it externally.
How long does it take to transfer data from an old drive?
Depends on how much data you have and the connection speed. Over USB 3.0, you can transfer about 100-200 MB per second. A 500GB drive full of data would take about 40-80 minutes. Over USB 2.0 (older adapter), it's much slower: about 30 MB per second, so the same drive could take 4-5 hours. Use USB 3.0 if possible.
Will removing the hard drive from my old computer void the warranty?
If the computer is still under warranty, opening it could void the warranty (though this varies by manufacturer). But if the computer is dead and out of warranty (which is the typical scenario here), it doesn't matter. Most computers that die and get replaced are past their warranty period.
Can I move data from a Windows computer to a Mac?
Yes. Connect the old Windows drive to a Mac using a USB adapter. macOS can read NTFS drives natively (read-only). You can copy files from the Windows drive to your Mac. If you need to write to the Windows drive from your Mac, you'll need a third-party tool like Paragon NTFS for Mac. Most people just need to copy files off the old drive, so read-only access is fine.
What if my old computer had two drives (SSD + HDD)?
Many computers use an SSD for the operating system and a separate HDD for storage. You'll want to grab both drives. The SSD likely has your Desktop, Documents, and Downloads folders. The HDD probably has larger files (photos, videos, games). Check both drives for important data.
Is my data at risk during the transfer?
No. Connecting a drive as an external via USB is a read-only operation (you're just copying files off it). You're not modifying the original data. Even if something goes wrong during the copy (power loss, cable disconnects), the source data on the old drive is untouched. You can always try again.
Can I recycle or dispose of the old computer after getting my data off?
