You cannot remove these chips and read them on another device without specialized equipment and firmware-level knowledge.

The 2020 27-inch iMac is actually a sweet spot for recovery. Apple put a small access door on the back of the machine specifically for the SSD module. You can pop it open with a standard pentalobe screwdriver, pull the module out, and read it with an adapter. No screen removal needed. It's the only iMac where Apple made storage access genuinely easy.
Unfortunately, they killed the 27-inch model after 2020. The current 24-inch M-series iMacs have no access door, no removable storage, and no easy path to the data if the machine dies.
Common iMac Failures That Lead to Data Loss
iMacs fail in specific ways, and the failure type determines your recovery options. Here are the ones we see most often.
Won't Power On at All
You press the power button. Nothing. No chime, no fan spin, no display. This is usually a power supply failure, a dead logic board, or a blown capacitor. The good news: in most of these cases, the storage drive itself is perfectly fine. The Mac just can't deliver power to it. For older iMacs with removable drives, this is the easiest recovery scenario. Pull the drive, plug it into another machine, copy the files.
For M-series iMacs where the SSD is soldered to the dead logic board, this gets complicated fast. The board needs to be repaired enough to power the SSD, or the NAND chips need to be read directly.
Kernel Panic and Boot Loops

Fusion Drive Split
This one is specific to iMacs with Fusion drives (2012-2019). A Fusion drive is Apple's marketing name for a logical volume that combines a small SSD and a large HDD into what looks like one drive to the user. macOS moves frequently accessed files to the fast SSD portion and keeps everything else on the HDD. When the logical link between the two drives breaks, the Fusion "splits," and suddenly your Mac either can't find its boot volume or shows two separate drives instead of one. Liquid Damage
Coffee. Water. Soda. We see it all. iMacs sit on desks where drinks live, and spills happen. Liquid damage can kill the logic board, corrode connectors, and short out components. Older HDD Models (Pre-2012): Yes, With the Right Tools
The thick-body iMacs from 2009 to 2011 are the most DIY-friendly. The glass panel is held on by magnets. You can pull it off with suction cups (the kind you'd use for a phone screen). Behind it, the LCD is held by screws. Remove those, disconnect the display cables carefully, and the 3.5-inch SATA hard drive is right there, mounted with standard screws.
What you need:
- Two small suction cups (heavy-duty, not the cheap phone ones)
- Torx T8 and T10 screwdrivers
- A SATA-to-USB dock or enclosure
- Another Mac or a Linux machine (to read the HFS+ or APFS file system)

Slim iMacs With Adhesive Screens (2012-2019): Risky DIY
These are doable if you've done this kind of work before, but the adhesive screen removal adds real risk. You need a plastic pizza-wheel cutter or iFixit's adhesive cutting tool, and you need to work slowly around the perimeter without pushing too deep (or you'll cut display cables). iFixit rates these as moderate difficulty, and they're not wrong.
If the drive inside is a standard 3.5-inch SATA HDD, you can plug it into any SATA dock once it's out. If it's a blade SSD, you'll need an Apple-specific adapter like the Sintech ST-NGFF2013-C or similar. Make sure you buy the right one for your model year, because Apple changed the blade connector between 2013 and 2016.
Fusion Drives: Tricky Even for Experienced People
If your iMac has a Fusion drive, you need to extract both the HDD and the SSD blade. The Fusion volume is a Core Storage logical volume group that spans both physical drives. If you only grab one half, you get partial data at best, nothing at worst. You need both drives plus software that can reconstruct the Core Storage volume. This is where most DIY attempts on Fusion iMacs fail.
M-Series iMacs (2021+): Don't Even Try
There is no removable storage. The NAND flash is soldered to the logic board. The data is encrypted by the Secure Enclave on the M-series chip. Without professional chip-off equipment and the knowledge to work with Apple's encryption, you cannot access this data. Not with software, not with a soldering iron from Amazon, not with any consumer tool.
How Professional iMac Recovery Works
When an iMac arrives at our lab, here's the general process we follow. The specific steps vary by model, but the approach is the same: figure out what failed, get to the storage, image the data.
Step 1: Diagnosis
We identify the exact iMac model, check the serial number, and determine what storage type is inside before opening anything. We test power delivery, check for signs of liquid damage, and try to boot the machine to see how far it gets. This tells us whether the problem is the logic board, the storage, the power supply, or something else entirely.
Step 2: Safe Disassembly
For adhesive-screen models, we use heated cutting tools to soften the adhesive and separate the display without cracking it. The display cables get disconnected in a specific order. Everything is documented so reassembly goes smoothly. For older magnetic-panel models, disassembly is faster and less risky.
Step 3: Drive Extraction and Imaging
Once we can access the storage, we create a bit-for-bit image of the entire drive. This is a forensic copy that captures every sector, including areas the file system might consider free space. We work from the image, never from the original drive. If the drive has bad sectors or is mechanically failing, we use specialized imaging hardware (like a PC-3000 or DeepSpar) that can read around bad areas and retry failed sectors without stressing the drive further.
Target Disk Mode (When the Mac Still Partially Works)
If the iMac's logic board is functional but macOS won't boot, Target Disk Mode can save time. You connect the iMac to another Mac with a Thunderbolt or USB-C cable, then hold down the T key during startup. The iMac mounts as an external drive on the other Mac, and you can copy files directly. This works on Intel iMacs running macOS Catalina or earlier. For macOS Big Sur and later on Intel, Apple replaced Target Disk Mode with "Share Disk" in macOS Recovery, which works similarly but requires a few extra steps.
On M-series iMacs, Target Disk Mode doesn't exist. Apple replaced it with Mac Sharing Mode, accessible through macOS Recovery. But if the machine can't reach Recovery Mode, this option is off the table.
Chip-Off for M-Series Soldered Storage
For dead M-series iMacs where the logic board can't be revived, chip-off is the last resort. This involves physically desoldering the NAND flash chips from the logic board using hot air rework stations, reading the raw data from each chip with a specialized programmer, and then reconstructing the file system from the raw dumps. It's painstaking work that requires understanding Apple's storage controller, wear leveling, and encryption implementation.

Fusion Drive Recovery
Fusion drives deserve their own section because they cause more confusion than any other Apple storage technology. If your iMac was made between 2012 and 2019, there's a good chance it has one.
What a Fusion Drive Actually Is
A Fusion drive is not a single piece of hardware. It's two separate physical drives: a small SSD (usually 24GB or 128GB) and a large HDD (1TB, 2TB, or 3TB). Apple's Core Storage technology combines these into a single logical volume that macOS presents as one drive. The SSD acts as a cache. Files you use frequently get moved to the SSD for fast access. Everything else lives on the HDD. The system manages this automatically.
From the user's perspective, it looks like one big fast drive. From a data recovery perspective, it's two drives pretending to be one, and that matters a lot when something goes wrong.
When Fusion Drives Split
A Fusion drive "split" happens when the Core Storage logical volume group breaks apart. Suddenly macOS sees two separate drives instead of one, and it can't figure out where anything is. Common causes:
- Power surge or sudden power loss during a write operation
- Failed macOS update
- One of the two drives developing bad sectors
- Attempting to install Boot Camp or another OS incorrectly
- Using Disk Utility to partition or erase one half of the Fusion
When a split happens, your data isn't necessarily gone. It's scattered across two drives in a way that the operating system can no longer make sense of. A recovery technician with the right tools can often reconstruct the logical volume and pull the data back together. But you need both halves. If someone extracts just the HDD and ignores the SSD blade, the most frequently used files (which are the ones you probably care about most) could be on the SSD that got left behind.
Recovering Data From a Split Fusion Drive
The recovery process for a split Fusion drive involves:
- Extracting both the HDD and the SSD blade from the iMac
- Imaging both drives independently
- Using specialized software to reconstruct the Core Storage logical volume from the two images
- Mounting the reconstructed volume and copying files
When both drives are healthy and the split was caused by a software event (power loss, failed update), recovery success rates are high. When one of the drives has hardware failure on top of the split, it gets more complex and more expensive.

On M-series iMacs, Target Disk Mode doesn't exist. Is my data encrypted on an iMac?
If FileVault is turned on, yes. macOS has offered FileVault disk encryption for years, and Apple silicon Macs (M1 and later) encrypt data by default through the Secure Enclave.
