Step 1: Identify Your MacBook Model

Before you do anything, you need to know exactly which MacBook you have. The recovery method changes dramatically based on your model year, and using the wrong approach can make things worse.

Here's how to figure it out:

1 Check the Bottom Case

Flip your MacBook over. The model number (like A1708, A2338, etc.) is printed in small text near the regulatory markings. This is the fastest way to identify your machine if it won't turn on at all.

2 Check Serial Number

The serial number is also on the bottom case. Go to checkcoverage.apple.com and enter it. Apple will tell you the exact model name and year.

3 If the MacBook Still Turns On

Click the Apple menu, then "About This Mac." It'll show you the model year, processor type (Intel vs. Apple Silicon), and storage configuration. This tells you everything you need to know about your recovery options.

MacBook Eras and Their Recovery Implications

Apple has redesigned the MacBook Pro's internal storage architecture four times. Each redesign made the machines thinner and faster, but also made data recovery progressively harder. Here's a quick overview before we go deep on each era.

Pre-2016 MacBooks: The Easy Ones

If you have a 2013, 2014, or 2015 MacBook Pro with Retina display, you're in the best possible situation for data recovery. These machines use a removable PCIe SSD that connects to the logic board via a standard-ish blade connector. You can physically remove the SSD in about five minutes with a pentalobe screwdriver and a T5 Torx bit.

How to Remove the SSD

1 Remove the Bottom Case

Use a P5 pentalobe screwdriver to remove the ten screws on the bottom of the MacBook. Keep track of which screws go where. The ones along the hinge are slightly longer than the rest.

2 Locate the SSD

The SSD is a small rectangular board, usually near one of the fans. It's held in place by a single T5 Torx screw at one end.

3 Remove and Read

Unscrew the T5 screw, gently slide the SSD out of its connector, and plug it into a compatible USB enclosure or adapter. Sintech and OWC both make adapters that convert Apple's proprietary SSD connector to standard M.2 or USB. You can then read the drive on any Mac or even a Windows PC with the right software.

Success rate for pre-2016 recovery: Extremely high. If the SSD itself isn't damaged (it rarely is, since SSDs handle physical shock well), you'll get everything back. The logic board can be completely fried and it won't matter. Your data lives on that removable blade, and nothing else needs to work.

One thing to watch out for: some 2013 to 2015 models may have FileVault enabled. If FileVault is on, you'll need the login password or the recovery key to decrypt the drive after removing it. More on that in the FileVault section below.

2016 to 2017 MacBooks: Removable but Proprietary

The 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models (both Touch Bar and non-Touch Bar) still have removable SSDs. That's the good news. The bad news is that Apple switched to a completely different connector. It's smaller, uses a different pin layout, and the adapters are harder to find and more expensive.

The SSD in these models sits in a different location compared to the 2013 to 2015 machines. It's a smaller module, and Apple designed a proprietary interface that doesn't match any standard M.2 or NVMe form factor. You need a specific adapter made for this generation.

Adapter Options

A few companies make adapters for the 2016/2017 MacBook Pro SSD connector. They're typically labeled as "Apple SSD to M.2 NVMe adapter" with compatibility listed for the A1708 (non-Touch Bar 2016/2017) models specifically. The Touch Bar models (A1706, A1707) also have removable SSDs, but the connector can differ slightly between revisions.

Important: The 2016/2017 non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro (A1708) has a different SSD connector than the Touch Bar models. Make sure you buy the right adapter for your specific model number. Using the wrong adapter won't damage anything, but it simply won't fit.

The removal process is similar to the pre-2016 models. Remove the bottom case, locate the SSD module, remove the retaining screw, and slide it out. Once you have the right adapter, the SSD can be read in an external enclosure or connected to another Mac.

The 2016/2017 Touch Bar Catch

Here's something a lot of people don't realize. On the 2016 and 2017 Touch Bar models, Apple actually included a data recovery port on the logic board. It's a small connector near the display cable. Apple designed a proprietary tool (internally called the "Data Migration Tool") that connects to this port and allows you to boot the machine into a special transfer mode, even if the display, keyboard, and trackpad are all dead.

Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers have this tool. If you bring your broken MacBook to Apple and your only goal is to recover your data, they may be able to use this port to help. However, Apple isn't always willing to do this, and they won't do it if the logic board is too damaged to power on at all.

2018 to 2020 Intel T2 MacBooks: Soldered Storage

This is where things get significantly harder. Starting with the 2018 MacBook Pro, Apple soldered the SSD storage chips (NAND flash) directly to the logic board. You can't remove them. You can't plug them into an adapter. The storage is physically part of the motherboard.

But that's only half the problem.

The T2 Security Chip

The 2018 to 2020 Intel MacBooks include Apple's T2 security chip. The T2 handles several things: the Touch Bar, the camera, audio processing, and most critically, real-time storage encryption. Every single byte written to the SSD is encrypted by the T2 chip before it hits the NAND flash. The encryption keys live inside the T2's secure enclave.

This means that even if you could somehow desolder the NAND chips and read them with specialized equipment (which is technically possible), the data would be encrypted. Without the T2 chip's keys, you'd have a pile of meaningless ciphertext. The encryption is AES-256, and it's not something that can be brute-forced in any realistic timeframe.

Critical point: On T2 MacBooks, if the logic board is completely dead and can't power on at all, recovering the data through normal methods becomes extremely difficult. The T2 chip must be functional because it holds the encryption keys. A dead T2 means the keys are locked inside it. This is one of the hardest recovery scenarios we deal with.

When the Logic Board Still Partially Works

Not all "broken" MacBooks are equally broken. If your MacBook has a cracked screen, a dead keyboard, a failed battery, or even liquid damage that only affected certain components, the logic board might still be functional enough to boot. And if the logic board boots, we have options.

The key question is: can the machine power on to the point where the T2 chip initializes? If yes, we can potentially use Target Disk Mode (on older macOS versions), DFU recovery, or external display output to access your data. If no, we need to do board-level repair first to get the logic board functional enough for the T2 to come online.

Board-Level Repair for Data Recovery

This is one of our specialties at MDrepairs. When a T2 MacBook's logic board has liquid damage or component failure, we don't need to make the entire laptop work perfectly. We just need to get the board to power on and initialize the T2. That might mean replacing a single shorted capacitor, reflowing a connection, or bypassing a failed power rail.

We're not trying to give you back a working laptop. We're trying to get the board alive just long enough to unlock the encryption and transfer your files. Once the data is safe, the board can go in the recycling bin for all it matters.

1 Diagnose the Board

We inspect the logic board under a microscope, check voltage rails with a multimeter, and identify which components failed. Liquid damage leaves visible corrosion patterns that tell us exactly what got shorted.

2 Targeted Repair

We replace or bypass only the components needed to get the board to POST (power-on self-test). This might be a single chip, a connector, or a group of capacitors. The goal is minimal intervention to get the T2 online.

3 Extract Data

Once the board boots, we connect an external drive and transfer everything off using Target Disk Mode, DFU mode, or a direct macOS file transfer depending on the machine's condition and macOS version.

M1, M2, M3, and M4 MacBooks: Unified Memory

Apple Silicon MacBooks represent the most challenging era for data recovery. Here's why.

On these machines, the SSD storage isn't just soldered to the logic board. It's integrated into the Apple Silicon system-on-chip (SoC) package. The NAND flash chips are placed right next to the M1/M2/M3/M4 processor on the same substrate, and the storage controller is built into the chip itself. Apple calls this "unified memory architecture," and it means the storage, RAM, and processor are all part of one tightly integrated system.

Encryption on Apple Silicon

Apple Silicon handles encryption similarly to the T2, but it's even more tightly coupled. The Secure Enclave is built directly into the M-series chip. Every piece of data is encrypted with keys that never leave the chip. There is no separate security processor to target. It's all one piece of silicon.

The practical effect: if the M-series chip is dead, the data is unrecoverable through any currently known method. No lab in the world, regardless of their equipment or expertise, can decrypt AES-256 data without the keys. And the keys are inside the dead chip.

Be skeptical of anyone who claims they can recover data from a dead Apple Silicon chip. If the SoC itself is non-functional, the encryption keys are inaccessible. Companies that promise otherwise are either misleading you or planning to charge you thousands of dollars before telling you it's not possible.

When Apple Silicon Recovery IS Possible

The situation isn't always hopeless. Most "dead" MacBooks aren't dead at the chip level. Here are the scenarios where we can still recover data from an Apple Silicon MacBook:

  • Screen damage only. The machine boots fine. You just can't see anything. Connect an external display, or use Share Disk Mode.
  • Keyboard or trackpad failure. Use an external keyboard and mouse. Boot normally.
  • Battery failure. The MacBook won't turn on because the battery is dead or swollen, but the logic board is fine. Replace or bypass the battery, and the machine boots. We walk through all these scenarios in our guide on recovering data from a Mac that won't turn on.
  • Peripheral circuit damage. Liquid damage that killed the USB-C ports, speakers, or other non-essential components but left the SoC intact. Board-level repair can bypass these failures.
  • Software corruption. macOS won't load, but the hardware is fine. DFU mode can help here.

The pattern is clear. If the Apple Silicon chip itself is functional, we can almost always get your data. The chip doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to boot far enough to establish the secure session and decrypt the storage.

Target Disk Mode and Share Disk Mode

These are two built-in macOS features that can save you from needing professional help, depending on your situation.

Target Disk Mode (Intel Macs)

Target Disk Mode turns your broken MacBook into what's basically an external hard drive. You connect it to a working Mac with a cable, and the broken Mac's storage shows up as a mounted volume on the working Mac. You can then drag and drop files off it.

Here's how to use it:

1 Connect the Macs

Use a Thunderbolt cable (or Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt) to connect the broken MacBook to a working Mac. USB-C to USB-C works on the 2016 and later Intel models.

2 Boot into Target Disk Mode

On the broken MacBook, hold down the T key while pressing the power button. Keep holding T until you see a Thunderbolt icon on the screen (if the screen works) or until the drive appears on the working Mac.

3 Access the Drive

The broken MacBook's internal SSD should appear in Finder on the working Mac. If FileVault is enabled, you'll be prompted to enter the password to unlock it. Once unlocked, copy everything you need.

Target Disk Mode requirements: The broken MacBook needs to power on and initialize its storage controller. If the machine is completely dead (no fan spin, no chime, no light), Target Disk Mode won't work. The logic board needs to be functional enough to present the storage to the other machine.

Share Disk Mode (Apple Silicon Macs)

Apple Silicon Macs don't support Target Disk Mode. Instead, they have something called Share Disk Mode, which works differently. It's part of the macOS Recovery environment and requires the machine to boot into recoveryOS.

1 Boot into Recovery

On the broken MacBook, press and hold the power button until you see "Loading startup options." Select Options, then click Continue to enter macOS Recovery.

2 Open Share Disk

In Recovery, go to the Utilities menu and select "Share Disk." Choose the volume you want to share and click "Start Sharing."

3 Connect from Another Mac

On a working Mac, open Finder. The shared disk should appear in the Network section of the sidebar. Connect to it and copy your files.

Share Disk Mode has a significant limitation: the broken MacBook needs to boot into Recovery. If the machine can't get that far, if it won't power on at all or gets stuck before Recovery loads, Share Disk Mode isn't an option. That's when you need DFU mode or professional help.

DFU Mode Recovery

DFU stands for Device Firmware Update. It's a low-level recovery mode that works even when macOS and recoveryOS are completely corrupted. Think of it as the last resort before professional recovery.

What DFU Mode Can Do

DFU mode lets a second Mac communicate directly with the broken MacBook's firmware. It can:

  • Restore or reinstall macOS when the OS is corrupted
  • Revive firmware that's been damaged by a failed update
  • Reset the SMC and other low-level controllers

What DFU mode cannot do: it can't fix hardware failures. If the logic board has a fried component, DFU mode won't help. It's a software-level recovery tool.

How to Use DFU Mode

1 Get a Second Mac

You need a working Mac running macOS Monterey 12.4 or later with Apple Configurator 2 installed (free from the App Store). This is the "host" Mac that will communicate with the broken one.

2 Connect via USB-C

Connect the two Macs with a USB-C cable. On the broken MacBook, use the specific port that Apple designates for DFU. For MacBook Pro models with multiple ports, it's typically the left rear port (closest to the screen hinge on the left side). Check Apple's support page for your specific model.

3 Enter DFU Mode

On the broken MacBook, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds (on Apple Silicon) or use the specific key combination for your model. The screen will stay black. On the host Mac, Apple Configurator 2 should detect the device in DFU mode.

4 Revive or Restore

Revive attempts to fix the firmware without erasing data. Try this first. Restore wipes the Mac and reinstalls everything from scratch, which means you lose your data. Always try Revive before Restore.

Do NOT click Restore unless you've already recovered your data or you've accepted that the data is gone. Restore erases the internal storage completely. There's no undo. If you're trying to recover data, Revive is the option you want. If Revive fails, stop and contact a professional before trying Restore.

FileVault Encryption and What It Means for Recovery

FileVault is Apple's full-disk encryption feature. On modern Macs (T2 and Apple Silicon), hardware encryption is always on regardless of whether you've enabled FileVault. But enabling FileVault adds a second layer: it ties the encryption to your login password.

The bottom line: if FileVault is on, you need the password. Either the user's login password or the FileVault recovery key that was generated when FileVault was first enabled. If you saved the recovery key to iCloud (which macOS prompts you to do), you can retrieve it from your Apple ID account. If you saved it locally or wrote it down, you need to find it.

No password, no recovery key? On a T2 or Apple Silicon Mac with FileVault enabled, if you don't have the password or recovery key, the data is not recoverable. Full stop. No lab can bypass FileVault encryption. This is one of the few situations where data recovery is truly impossible regardless of budget or expertise. Always keep your FileVault recovery key somewhere safe.

How to Find Your FileVault Recovery Key

If you chose to store your recovery key with Apple (iCloud) when you enabled FileVault, here's how to retrieve it:

  1. Go to iforgot.apple.com on any device
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID
  3. Follow the prompts to retrieve your FileVault recovery key

If you chose to save the key locally, check your email (some people emailed it to themselves), your password manager, or any printed documents from when you set up the Mac.

What a Data Recovery Lab Can Do

So what happens when none of the DIY methods work? When the MacBook won't power on, Target Disk Mode fails, and DFU mode can't detect the machine? That's when a professional lab earns its keep.

Removable SSD Models (Pre-2018)

For older MacBooks, a lab can:

  • Remove the SSD and read it directly with professional-grade adapters and forensic tools
  • Handle FileVault-encrypted drives if you provide the password or recovery key
  • Recover data from SSDs with firmware issues that won't mount normally
  • Extract data from SSDs with bad NAND blocks using low-level access

These recoveries are almost always successful. The SSD is independent of the logic board, so it doesn't matter how badly the MacBook itself is damaged. T2 MacBooks (2018 to 2020)

For T2 machines, a lab can:

  • Perform board-level micro-soldering to repair the logic board enough for the T2 chip to initialize

  • Use DFU mode on repaired boards to access storage
  • Transfer the T2 chip and NAND to a donor board in extreme cases (highly specialized and not always possible)

Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 and Later)

For Apple Silicon, a lab can:

  • Diagnose whether the failure is the SoC or a peripheral component
  • Repair peripheral circuits (power delivery, USB-C, display, battery) to get the SoC to boot
  • Use Share Disk Mode or external display output once the board is functional
  • Perform software-level recovery via DFU if the issue is firmware corruption
What a lab cannot do: If the M-series SoC itself is dead (the actual silicon, not just a surrounding component), the data is encrypted with keys that no longer exist in an accessible form. Honest labs will tell you this upfront. Dishonest ones will charge you diagnostic fees, string you along for weeks, and then tell you recovery wasn't possible.

Here's the key concept most people miss: whether the logic board matters depends entirely on whether the storage is removable.

On pre-2018 MacBooks, the logic board is irrelevant to data recovery. It can be shattered into pieces. Doesn't matter. The SSD comes out and gets read independently.

On 2018 and later MacBooks, the logic board IS the storage. The NAND flash and the encryption chip (T2 or M-series) are both on the logic board. If the board doesn't work, you can't access the data. That's why board-level repair skills are the most important thing a data recovery lab can offer for modern MacBook recovery.

What to Look for in a Recovery Lab

If you're going to send your MacBook to a professional, here's what matters:

  • Board-level repair capability. Not just "we partner with a repair shop." The lab itself should have micro-soldering equipment and technicians who work on logic boards daily.
  • No data, no charge policy. Any lab that charges you regardless of whether they recover your data is not aligned with your interests.

What's the difference between Target Disk Mode and Share Disk Mode?

Target Disk Mode is available on Intel Macs (pre-Apple Silicon). You boot the broken Mac while holding the T key, and it presents its storage as an external drive over Thunderbolt or USB-C. Share Disk Mode is the Apple Silicon replacement, but it requires booting into macOS Recovery first, which means the Mac needs to be more functional. Target Disk Mode works at a lower level and can sometimes succeed even when macOS is completely corrupted.

Can data be recovered from a MacBook with a cracked screen?

A cracked or dead screen is one of the easiest recovery scenarios. The storage and logic board are completely fine. Just connect an external monitor via USB-C, Thunderbolt, or HDMI (depending on your model), log in normally, and copy your files to an external drive. No professional help needed unless the screen damage also impacted the logic board, which is uncommon.
