How to Recover Data from a Laptop That Won't Turn On

If your laptop won't turn on, your files are almost always still safe on its drive: a dead laptop usually means a bad battery, power jack, or motherboard, not a wiped disk. The drive can be read separately to recover everything.

  1. Stop trying to force-boot it repeatedly; rule out the charger first.
  2. If the drive isn't soldered, it can be removed and read externally.
  3. For a failed drive or soldered storage, use laptop data recovery.

If your laptop won't turn on and you need your files, the good news is your data is almost certainly still on the drive. A dead laptop usually means a failed battery, bad power jack, fried motherboard, or corrupted operating system. There are a few ways to recover data from a laptop that won't turn on, and the right approach depends on what's actually wrong. Some methods you can handle yourself with a $15 adapter. Why Your Laptop Won't Turn On

Before you try to recover anything, it helps to understand why the laptop died. The cause tells you a lot about whether your data is safe and which recovery method will work best.

Dead or Degraded Battery

Laptop batteries wear out. After a few years, they hold less and less charge until they can't power the machine at all. If you plug in the charger and the laptop still won't turn on, the battery may have degraded to the point where it's actually blocking power delivery. Some laptops won't boot at all with a completely dead battery, even when plugged in.

Try removing the battery (if it's removable) and powering the laptop from the charger alone. On newer laptops with sealed batteries, this isn't an option. But it's the first thing to try on older models.

Failed Power Jack or Charger

The charging port takes a beating. People trip over cables, yank them out at angles, and carry laptops around while plugged in. Over time the solder joints on the DC jack crack. The laptop looks dead but really it just isn't receiving power. Check if the charger LED lights up. Try a different charger if you have one that fits. Wiggle the plug gently and watch for any sign of life on the screen.

Motherboard Failure

This is the big one. Liquid spills, power surges, overheating, or just age can kill a motherboard. When the motherboard fails, nothing works. No lights, no fan spin, no screen. The laptop is essentially a brick. But the storage drive? It's a separate component. The motherboard dying doesn't touch the data on your drive.

Corrupted Operating System

Sometimes the laptop isn't really "dead." It's trying to boot but failing. You might see a black screen with a blinking cursor. Or a blue screen that flashes for a second. Or an error message about a missing boot device. In these cases, the hardware is fine. Windows or macOS just can't load. Your data is definitely still there.

Failed Storage Drive

This is the worst-case scenario. If the hard drive or SSD itself has failed, the laptop might not turn on properly because it can't find a boot device. Or it turns on but sits at a black screen forever. If you hear clicking sounds during boot, or if the BIOS doesn't detect any storage device, the drive may be physically damaged. This is when you need professional recovery.

Quick tip: If your laptop shows any signs of life at all (fans spin, LEDs light up, screen flickers), your data is very likely safe. A laptop that's truly dead at the motherboard level almost never means the drive is damaged too.

Is Your Data Still on the Drive?

Short answer: yes, almost always.

Your laptop's storage drive is a standalone component. Think of it like a filing cabinet inside an office building. If the building loses power, the files in the cabinet don't disappear. They're still sitting right where you left them. The building just can't show them to you right now.

The same applies to your laptop. The motherboard, screen, RAM, and battery are all part of the "building." The hard drive or SSD is the filing cabinet. When any of those other components fail, your data stays untouched on the drive.

There are only two scenarios where the data might actually be at risk:

  • The drive itself failed. If the HDD has a mechanical failure (clicking, grinding) or the SSD controller died, the data exists on the storage media but can't be accessed through normal means. A professional lab can still recover it in most cases.
  • Encryption without the key. If you enabled BitLocker (Windows) or FileVault (Mac) and don't have the recovery key, removing the drive and connecting it to another computer won't help. The data is encrypted. You'll need the key to decrypt it.

Outside of those two situations, your data is sitting on that drive waiting for you to access it. The question is just how to get to it.

How to Remove the Drive Yourself

This is the most reliable DIY method for recovering data from a laptop that won't turn on. You physically remove the storage drive from the dead laptop and connect it to a working computer. It sounds intimidating if you've never done it, but on most laptops it's genuinely straightforward.

Before you start: Make sure the laptop is completely powered off and unplugged. Remove the battery if possible. Touching components while there's residual power can damage them. Also, ground yourself by touching a metal surface to discharge static electricity.

Older Laptops (Pre-2015 or So)

Most older laptops have a dedicated drive bay on the bottom. Look for a rectangular panel held in by one or two Phillips screws. Remove the screws, slide the panel off, and you'll see the hard drive sitting in a caddy or bracket. It connects via a SATA connector that just pulls straight out. No tools needed beyond a small screwdriver.

Some models use a pull tab or ribbon cable to make the drive easier to slide out. Don't force anything. If the drive doesn't come out easily, look for hidden screws or clips holding it in place.

Modern Laptops (2016 and Newer)

Newer laptops are trickier. Many have moved to M.2 SSDs that sit directly on the motherboard. You'll need to remove the entire bottom panel to access them. This usually means 8 to 12 small screws (often Torx T5 or pentalobe on MacBooks) and some careful prying with a plastic spudger to release the clips.

Once inside, the M.2 SSD is a small rectangular board about the size of a stick of gum. It's held by a single screw at one end. Remove that screw, and the SSD tilts up at an angle so you can pull it out of the slot.

MacBooks

Apple makes this harder than it needs to be. MacBooks from 2013 to 2017 use a proprietary SSD connector that's different from standard M.2. You'll need an Apple-specific adapter to connect it to another computer. MacBooks from 2018 and later have the SSD soldered directly to the motherboard. You physically cannot remove it. For soldered SSDs, skip ahead to the When DIY Won't Work section.

1 Gather Your Tools

You'll need a small Phillips or Torx screwdriver (T5 for MacBooks, Phillips #0 for most others), a plastic spudger or old credit card for prying clips, and an anti-static surface to work on. A clean desk works fine.

2 Remove the Bottom Panel

Flip the laptop over. Remove all visible screws. Some may be different lengths, so note which ones go where. Gently pry the panel off starting from one corner. Don't use a metal tool for this. Plastic only.

3 Locate and Remove the Drive

Find the storage drive. For a 2.5" HDD or SATA SSD, it's in a caddy near the edge. For an M.2 SSD, it's a small card on the motherboard. Disconnect the cable or remove the retaining screw. Slide the drive out carefully.

4 Label It

Note the drive type (2.5" SATA, M.2 SATA, M.2 NVMe) because you'll need the right adapter in the next step. M.2 drives have a notch on the connector edge. One notch on the left side means it's an M-key (NVMe). Two notches means B+M key (usually SATA). If you're not sure, just Google the laptop model plus "SSD type."

Connect the Drive to Another Computer

Now that the drive is out, you need a way to plug it into a working computer. The adapter you need depends on what type of drive you have.

Plug the adapter into your working computer's USB port. The drive should show up within a few seconds as an external drive in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac). If it does, congratulations. Just drag and drop your files to the working computer. That's it.

If the drive doesn't show up, or if Windows says it needs to be formatted, don't panic. And definitely don't click "Format." That would erase your data. The drive might have a file system the computer can't read (common when connecting a Mac drive to a Windows PC, or vice versa), or it could have corruption that needs specific tools to handle.

Mac drive on a Windows PC? Windows can't natively read APFS or HFS+ file systems. You'll need third-party software like HFSExplorer (free) or Paragon APFS for Windows to access the files. The reverse is also true: Macs can read NTFS but can't write to it without additional software.

Boot from a USB Drive (Without Removing Anything)

If you don't want to open the laptop, or if the drive is soldered in, there's another option. You can try booting the laptop from a USB flash drive. This only works if the laptop has enough functionality to reach the BIOS or boot menu. If absolutely nothing happens when you press the power button, skip this section.

But if the laptop powers on, shows lights, spins fans, or gets to any kind of screen at all, a USB boot might work.

Using a Linux Live USB

The idea is simple. You create a bootable USB stick with a lightweight Linux operating system, boot the laptop from it, and then access the internal drive through the Linux file manager. Linux doesn't care if Windows is broken. It just mounts the drive and shows you the files.

1 Create the USB Drive

On a working computer, download Ubuntu (ubuntu.com/download) or Linux Mint. Then download Rufus (Windows) or balenaEtcher (Mac) to write the ISO file to a USB flash drive. You need at least an 8GB USB stick.

2 Boot From USB

Insert the USB drive into the dead laptop. Turn it on and immediately start pressing the boot menu key. This varies by manufacturer: F12 (Dell, Lenovo), F9 (HP), Esc (Asus), or Option (Mac). Select the USB drive from the boot menu.

3 Access Your Files

Once Linux loads, open the file manager. Your internal drive should appear in the left sidebar. Click it to mount it. Now you can browse all your files and copy them to another USB drive or external hard drive.

This method works great for corrupted Windows installations, boot loop issues, and Safe Mode alternatives when blue screen problems occur. It won't help if the storage drive itself is dead, because Linux will have the same trouble reading a failed drive that Windows did. If your laptop turns on but shows no display on the monitor, your data is probably fine and you just need to fix the display output.

SSD vs. HDD: Does It Matter for Recovery?

Yes. The type of storage drive in your laptop changes the recovery picture in a few important ways.

Hard Drives (HDD)

Traditional hard drives store data on spinning metal platters using a magnetic head. When a laptop with an HDD won't turn on, the data on those platters doesn't go anywhere. It's magnetically written and stays put whether the laptop has power or not. Even if the HDD has some physical damage, a professional lab can often recover data by replacing the faulty components (heads, motor, PCB) in a cleanroom and imaging the platters.

HDDs are actually more forgiving for recovery than SSDs in many scenarios. The data is physically "written" on a surface, so as long as that surface isn't destroyed, recovery is possible. Check out our hard drive data recovery page for more on this.

Solid State Drives (SSD)

SSDs store data electronically in NAND flash chips. No moving parts, which means they're more durable in the physical sense. Dropping a laptop is less likely to damage an SSD than an HDD. But when SSDs fail, they tend to fail suddenly and completely. There's no gradual clicking or grinding to warn you.

The bigger concern with SSDs is encryption and TRIM. Many modern SSDs encrypt data by default at the hardware level. If the SSD controller dies, accessing the raw NAND chips requires specialized equipment and expertise. Also, SSDs periodically run a TRIM operation that permanently erases deleted data blocks, making recovery of deleted files much harder than on HDDs.

The bottom line: Whether your dead laptop has an HDD or SSD, the data is almost certainly still physically present on the drive. The recovery approach just varies depending on the drive type and the nature of the failure.

When DIY Won't Work

The methods above work great when the laptop is dead but the drive is healthy. Sometimes, though, the drive is part of the problem. Here's when to stop trying and call a professional.

The Drive Makes Clicking or Grinding Sounds

If you connect the removed HDD to another computer and hear repetitive clicking, the read/write heads are damaged. Every second that drive runs, the heads are scraping the platter surfaces and destroying data. Turn it off. Don't plug it in again. This needs a cleanroom head swap.

The Drive Isn't Detected at All

You connected it with the right adapter. You tried multiple USB ports. You tried a different computer. The drive doesn't show up anywhere, not even in Disk Management or Disk Utility. This means the drive's electronics or internal components have failed. For HDDs, it could be a dead PCB or seized motor. For SSDs, it's usually a dead controller chip.

The Drive Shows Up but Can't Be Read

The computer sees the drive but can't access any partitions. It might show as "Unallocated" in Disk Management or prompt you to format it. If you have data you need, do not format. The file system metadata is corrupted, but the actual data is likely intact underneath. Recovery software might work here, but if the corruption is severe, a professional will have better tools.

The SSD Is Soldered to the Motherboard

This is increasingly common in ultrabooks and all MacBooks made after 2018. The SSD chips are permanently attached to the motherboard. You can't remove them. If the laptop is completely dead and the SSD is soldered, a data recovery lab needs to either repair the board enough to access the SSD, or desolder the NAND chips and read them directly. This is advanced work that requires specialized equipment.

The Drive Is Encrypted

BitLocker, FileVault, or hardware-level encryption means the data on the drive is scrambled without the right key. Even if you remove the drive and connect it to another machine, you'll see gibberish. If you have your BitLocker recovery key (check your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com/devices) or your FileVault recovery key, you can decrypt it. Without the key, recovery is extremely difficult, even for professionals.

Stop immediately if: Your HDD is clicking. The drive smells burnt. You see physical damage to the circuit board. Running a damaged drive, even for a few minutes, can turn a recoverable situation into a permanent data loss.

Mistakes That Can Destroy Your Data

When people realize their laptop is dead and their data might be trapped, they start trying everything they can find online. Some of that advice is genuinely helpful. Some of it will make things permanently worse. Here's what not to do.

Don't Reinstall Windows

If your laptop boots to a recovery screen or prompts you to reset Windows, do not click "Reset this PC" or "Reinstall Windows." Both options will overwrite data on the drive. If you need your files, you need to get them off the drive first, then deal with the operating system.

Don't Format When Prompted

When you connect a drive to another computer, Windows might pop up a message saying "You need to format the disk before you can use it." Click Cancel. Formatting erases the file system that tells the drive where your files are stored. The data might still be recoverable after a quick format, but you've just made it harder and more expensive.

Don't Keep Trying a Clicking Drive

We mentioned this earlier, but it's worth repeating because it's the single most common mistake we see. If your HDD is clicking, every power cycle is destroying data. Each time those damaged heads drag across the platters, they wipe out tracks of data. We've had customers bring in drives where the first few power-ons would have allowed full recovery, but by the time they stopped trying "one more time," half the data was gone.

One attempt. That's it. If it clicks, turn it off and call a professional.

Don't Use Data Recovery Software on a Physically Damaged Drive

Recovery software like Recuva, Disk Drill, or R-Studio works by scanning every sector on the drive. On a healthy drive with a logical issue, this is fine. On a physically failing drive, it forces the damaged hardware to work harder and faster than it should. The scan accelerates the damage. By the time the software finishes (if it finishes), there may be less data left than when you started.

Don't Open the Drive Without a Cleanroom

Hard drives are assembled in environments with filtered air. The gap between the read/write heads and the platter surface is smaller than a speck of dust. If you open a hard drive on your desk, dust particles land on the platters and cause head crashes the moment you power it on again. We get drives in our lab every month that were opened at home or at a computer repair shop. The recovery is always harder and more expensive.

Don't Freeze It

The "put it in the freezer" trick has been debunked for over a decade, but people still try it. Freezing a hard drive causes condensation when you take it out. Water on the platters causes corrosion. Water on the PCB can short-circuit components. This trick might have worked in 1998 with much simpler drive designs. With modern drives, it's a guaranteed way to make things worse.
