Console manufacturers are hardware and software companies, not data recovery specialists. Data recovery requires cleanroom facilities, specialized tools, and years of training. It's a completely different business model. Additionally, offering data recovery would require manufacturers to have processes for handling and decrypting customer storage, which creates security and liability concerns. They'd rather push cloud backup as the solution, and honestly, cloud backup is the best solution. It just doesn't help retroactively after a failure.
Can a game console SSD be replaced if it fails?
On the PS5, yes. The internal SSD is an M.2 2230 drive that can be replaced. Sony even sells replacement consoles with SSD upgrade instructions. On the Xbox Series X, the internal SSD can technically be replaced, but it requires disassembly and the new drive needs to be provisioned with Xbox firmware. On the Switch, the internal eMMC is soldered to the motherboard, so it can't be replaced without board-level soldering skills. Replacing the storage gets the console working again but doesn't recover data from the old drive.
What's the success rate for console data recovery?
For external drive recovery (USB HDDs and microSD cards), success rates are around 85-95%, similar to standard data recovery. For internal encrypted storage on a dead console where the board can be repaired, success is around 60-75%. For chip-off recovery of encrypted internal storage where the console can't be repaired, success drops to 20-40% because of encryption barriers. The success rate depends heavily on the specific failure and how much damage has been done.
