If your iPhone won't charge and you can't even get it to turn on, your photos and messages are still on the storage chip inside. Charging failures are usually a port, cable, battery, or power chip problem. None of those touch the data partition. The challenge isn't recovering data from a lost-photos sense. It's getting the phone to a state where the storage can be read at all. Sometimes that's a five-dollar cable. Sometimes it's a board-level repair. Either way, the data is sitting there waiting.
The wrong move at this point is to keep trying random chargers, drop the phone into rice, or hand it to a kiosk that promises a "quick fix." Every one of those can make a recoverable phone unrecoverable. Below we walk through the right diagnostic order: confirm it's not the cable, clean the port, check for hidden water damage, and figure out whether it's a software issue, a port replacement, a battery, or a power chip on the board. We'll also explain how a lab pulls data without ever needing the phone to hold a charge.
What "Won't Charge" Actually Means
"Won't charge" covers a few different symptoms, and the specific symptom matters for diagnosis. People call us with these descriptions and they're not the same thing.
- Phone is dead and won't turn on at all. No screen, no Apple logo, no vibration. Could be a dead battery, a damaged port, or a dead board.
- Phone shows the empty battery icon and never charges past it. The phone is taking some power, but not enough or not consistently.
- Phone says "Charging" but battery percentage never goes up. Trickle charge that's not actually working, or a software readout problem.
- Phone charges, then suddenly stops, then starts again. Intermittent contact, often a port or cable issue.
- Phone gets hot when plugged in but doesn't charge. A shorted component is drawing power and turning it into heat. Stop now.
- Phone shows "Liquid detected in Lightning/USB-C connector". iOS is refusing to charge because of detected moisture. The data is still safe.
The first thing we ask on a call is which of these you're seeing. The fix depends entirely on it.
The Six Common Causes
Here are the buckets nearly every "iPhone won't charge" case falls into. Knowing which bucket yours is in helps you decide what to try and when to call.
1. The Cable or Adapter Is Bad
This is the most common cause and the easiest to miss. MFi-certified cables can wear out internally even when they look fine. Third-party cables and adapters fail at much higher rates than Apple's own. We've had customers ship us iPhones that turned out to charge fine with our shop's cable. We send them back free of charge with that lesson.
2. Lint in the Port
The number two cause. iPhones spend most of their lives in pockets and bags. Lint compacts at the bottom of the Lightning or USB-C port over months. Eventually the cable can't make full contact. The phone reads "not charging" or only charges intermittently. Removing the lint with a wooden toothpick fixes it. It looks like a small thing but it's surprisingly common.
3. Damaged Charging Port
You yanked the cable sideways one too many times. A pin is bent. A connector pad is broken. The port physically can't make contact anymore. This is a repair issue, not a software issue. A port replacement is a 1-2 hour job at most repair shops, but the data extraction side of it matters too.
4. Battery Has Failed
iPhone batteries last about 500 full charge cycles before noticeable degradation. After three to four years, the battery can refuse to hold a charge at all. Or it can short internally and cause the phone to reject charging input as a safety measure. A battery replacement (genuine or high-quality third-party) usually fixes this.
5. Power Management IC (PMIC) Failure
The PMIC is the chip on the logic board that distributes voltage to every other component. When it fails, the phone can't manage incoming power. Symptoms include the phone getting hot when plugged in, drawing weird current patterns, or refusing all charging input. PMIC repair is a board-level job that requires a microscope and hot-air rework. Apple's own service guides categorize this as a logic board issue.
6. Hidden Liquid Damage
Your phone got splashed weeks or months ago. You dried it. It worked. Corrosion grew slowly on a contact pad or trace near the charging circuit. Now the charging path is broken. We see this constantly. Hidden water damage shows up months later in this guide.

Almost certainly yes. None of the six causes above touch the data partition. Lint doesn't damage NAND. A bad port doesn't corrupt photos. A failed battery doesn't wipe messages. A PMIC failure stops the phone from booting, but the storage chip is fine. Water damage takes weeks to months to spread to the storage chip itself, and even then it's contained to specific areas.
The data is stored on the NAND flash chip soldered to the logic board. NAND is non-volatile, meaning it holds data without any power applied. Your photos are sitting on that chip whether the phone has been off for an hour or a year. Recovery isn't about saving data from a dying chip. It's about reaching the chip through a phone that won't fully boot.
A few situations make recovery harder, though they're rare:
- Severe board damage from a short circuit. A counterfeit charger or a fault that shorted multiple chips can take out enough of the board that even chip-off recovery is tricky.
- NAND damage from sustained heat. If the phone was very hot for a long time (left in a car in summer, etc.), some NAND sectors can be affected. Most data is still readable but some may be lost.
- You forgot the passcode. Modern iPhones encrypt the data partition with a key derived from your passcode. Without it, even successfully reading the NAND doesn't get you decrypted data. More on passcode lockouts here.
What Not to Do Right Now
These moves are common. They all make things worse.
- Plug into a cheap fast charger you got off Amazon. Counterfeit chargers can deliver wrong voltages. A weak phone can be killed by a bad voltage spike.
- Use a cable that's visibly frayed or has bent pins. A damaged cable can cause shorts inside the phone.
- Stick anything metal in the charging port. Paper clips, pins, tweezers. You will short something out and turn a $200 repair into a $1,500 repair.
- Put the phone in rice. Rice does nothing useful. It can actually push fine grain dust into the port and trap moisture. If you suspect water damage, get the phone to a lab, not your pantry.
- Plug it into your car's USB port. Many car USB ports have noisy power that can damage already-weak iPhones. Use a wall adapter only.
- Try to open the phone yourself. Battery puncture is a real fire risk. iPhones have stretched adhesive that releases with heat. Without the right tools, you can puncture the battery and start a lithium fire.
- Take it to a mall kiosk that "diagnoses". Their diagnosis is usually "you need a new phone" or "we can fix it for $400" without any real assessment. If your goal is the data, find a lab.
Safe Triage You Can Do Yourself
None of these steps risk your data. Run through them in order. If one fixes it, you're done.
Use a genuine Apple cable if you can borrow one. Use a wall adapter that you know works with another phone. Not a car charger, not a laptop USB port. Wall power only. Leave the phone plugged in for at least 30 minutes before deciding it's not the cable.
Shine a bright light directly into the Lightning or USB-C port. Look for lint, hair, fuzz, or any debris. Compare to a known clean phone if you have one. The port should be visibly empty all the way to the back.
If you see lint, use a wooden toothpick. Slide it gently against one wall of the port, then drag back. Repeat on all four walls. Do not use anything metal. Do not jam the toothpick straight in. After cleaning, try a charger again.
For iPhone 8 and newer: press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button. Keep holding for at least 30 seconds with the phone plugged in. Sometimes a dead phone needs both a force restart and continuous power simultaneously to wake up.
If the battery has been completely dead for a week or longer, the phone may need a long trickle charge before it shows any signs of life. Leave it plugged into a wall adapter overnight. Don't touch it. Check the next morning.
If none of those steps wake the phone up, you're past the point of DIY. The next step is professional diagnosis.
Deep Discharge: When the Battery Sat Dead Too Long
Lithium-ion batteries don't like being completely empty for long periods. When a battery sits at 0% for weeks, its internal voltage drops below the level the iPhone's charging circuit considers "safe." The phone refuses to charge at full speed because doing so on a deeply discharged cell can cause a fire. This is a protection feature, not a failure.
The fix is patience. Plug the phone in and leave it for 24 to 72 hours. The phone will trickle-charge the battery very slowly until the voltage comes back into the safe range. Then it'll start charging normally. Most people give up after 30 minutes and assume the phone is dead. It's not. It just needs more time.
If 72 hours of continuous wall power doesn't bring the phone back, the battery has probably failed permanently and won't recover. At that point you need a battery replacement at minimum, possibly more.
Phone Repair Shop vs Data Recovery Lab
These are different services with different priorities. If your only concern is data, the lab is the right call. If you want the phone working again and you've backed up the data already, a repair shop is faster and cheaper. Here's how they differ.

If you call a repair shop with a charging issue, their assumption is that you want the phone fixed. They may do a factory reset to "test" the repair, which wipes the phone. Inside the Lab: Data Extraction Without a Working Phone
Here's what happens at MDrepairs when a non-charging iPhone arrives. The exact path varies by cause, but the structure is the same.
Hour One: Diagnosis on the Bench Power Supply
We connect the phone to a bench power supply, not a wall adapter. The power supply lets us see exactly how much current the phone is drawing at the moment of power-on attempt. A healthy iPhone has a specific current signature. Anything different tells us what's wrong before we even open the phone.
If current looks normal: the issue is the port or the cable, not the board. Quick fix.
If current is too low or zero: dead PMIC or open circuit somewhere on the power rail.
If current is too high: a shorted component is draining power. We have to find and remove the short before any other work.
If current oscillates: power is being applied then cut off. Usually a damaged trace or cracked solder joint.
Targeted Repair
We fix only what's necessary to read the data partition. For a damaged port, that's a port replacement under a microscope. For a dead PMIC, that's a chip-level swap with hot-air rework. For a shorted component, that's localizing the short, removing the failed part, and confirming the rest of the board is healthy.
Data Extraction
Once the phone reaches a stable state where the data partition is accessible, we connect through our recovery tools. The phone boots far enough to authenticate with the passcode you provide. The data is decrypted in place. We pull the photos, messages, contacts, and app data as standard files. The phone doesn't need to fully boot to iOS for this to work. We're using the bootloader's authentication path, not the iOS lock screen.
When Repair Isn't Possible
For severe board damage, we sometimes need to chip-off the NAND, physically removing the storage chip and reading it directly. On iPhones, chip-off only works when paired with the original encryption keys, which means we usually also need the logic board to be partially functional. Pure chip-off without keys is a dead end on iPhones.

What Data Comes Back
Once we can read the data partition, almost everything comes out. The list:
- Photos and videos from the Camera Roll, including ones never synced to iCloud
- Text messages and iMessages, including attachments and groups
- Contacts, with full notes and additional fields
- Call history
- WhatsApp, Signal, Messenger chat threads with media
- Notes, including ones with attached photos, drawings, and scans
- Voice memos
- Voicemails
- Health and Fitness data (years of running history, steps, sleep)
- App documents stored locally on the phone
- Reminders and Calendar entries

Charging problems are usually preventable. The same habits that prevent the failure also protect you when one happens anyway.
Use Quality Cables
Apple's own cables aren't cheap, but they last. Third-party MFi-certified cables from brands like Anker and Belkin are fine. Anything unbranded from a gas station or random Amazon seller is a coin flip. Cheap cables damage iPhones every day.
Clean the Port Quarterly
Every three months, shine a flashlight in the charging port. Remove any lint with a wooden toothpick. This single habit prevents most port-related charging failures.
Don't Charge Hot Phones
If your phone has been in a hot car, in direct sun, or running a heavy game for an hour, let it cool before plugging in. Charging adds heat. Stacking heat on heat damages the battery faster than anything else.
Replace Aging Batteries Before They Fail
Settings, Battery, Battery Health. If you're below 80%, get it replaced. A weak battery puts more stress on the charging circuit and on the rest of the phone. Cheap insurance.
Turn On iCloud Backup

Avoid Wireless Charging on a Damaged Phone
If your phone has been dropped or got wet, don't move to wireless charging "to be safe." Wireless charging generates internal heat and can stress already-damaged components. Wired charging through a known-good cable is gentler in this situation.

FAQ
How long should an iPhone be plugged in before I decide it's broken?
At least 30 minutes for a normal "dead battery" situation. Up to 72 hours if you suspect deep discharge from the phone sitting dead for weeks. If 72 hours of continuous wall power produces no signs of life, the issue is past a flat battery.
Can I get my photos off if the phone never turns on at all?
Yes, in most cases. A lab can extract data from a phone that won't even show the Apple logo. The data lives on the NAND chip, which doesn't need the phone to boot. We need the logic board to function enough to read the chip, but full boot isn't required.
What if my charging port is bent or broken?
A bent or broken port is a repair job. We can replace the port under a microscope, then extract the data once the phone charges again. Total cost is usually $400 to $800 depending on the model. About 3 to 7 business days.
I see "Liquid detected in connector" but the phone seems fine. What now?
iOS detected moisture in the port. The phone is refusing to charge to protect the components. Let the phone sit in a dry room with the port facing down for 24 hours. Don't put it in rice. Don't blow on it. Don't shake it. Often the warning clears on its own. If it doesn't, the port has corrosion that needs attention.
My phone gets hot when plugged in but doesn't charge. Should I keep trying?
No. Heat with no charging means a shorted component is dissipating power as heat. Continuing to apply power makes the damage worse. Unplug, let it cool, and call a lab. The data is still likely safe but only if you stop now.
Will a brand-new battery from a repair shop fix the problem?
If the battery is the cause, yes. If the cause is the port or a board-level issue, a new battery won't help and the shop may not be able to diagnose accurately. A lab diagnoses at the board level before any parts get swapped.
Can I just buy a new phone and have you transfer the data later?
Yes. You don't need to wait. Buy a new iPhone now, set it up fresh, and ship us the old one. We'll extract the data and deliver it as files you can move onto the new phone. Most customers do exactly this so they're not without a phone during the recovery.
