iPhone Fell in the Toilet or Ocean: Why Saltwater Damage Is Worse

If your iPhone fell in the toilet, ocean, pool, or any non-fresh water, you have hours, not days, before the data becomes unrecoverable. Saltwater, sewage, chlorinated water, and bleach-treated water are far more destructive than tap water because they carry dissolved minerals, biological contaminants, and free ions that conduct electricity through every circuit on the logic board. Corrosion starts within minutes. By tomorrow, the damage is often irreversible. The next steps you take in the next five minutes decide whether your photos and messages survive.

Here's the most important rule: power the phone off immediately, do not press buttons to check if it works, do not plug it into a charger, and do not put it in rice. Rice does nothing. Charging a wet phone can short the logic board and kill it instantly. The single best thing you can do at home is rinse the device with distilled water if you have it on hand, then call a recovery lab. Real lab cleaning beats sitting and hoping every time.

The First 5 Minutes: What to Do Now

If you're reading this with a wet phone in your hand, stop reading and do these things in order. Then come back.

Step 1: Power it off. Immediately.

If it's already off, leave it off. If it's on, hold the side button and either volume button until "slide to power off" appears, then slide. If the screen won't respond, do a force restart hold (Volume Up, Volume Down, hold Side button) to force shutdown. Every second the phone stays on with water inside causes more circuit damage.

Step 2: Do not charge. Do not plug into anything.

Charging current passes through wet components. That's how phones die instantly after surviving the initial dunk. Don't even insert a Lightning or USB-C cable to see if it works.

Step 3: Get the saltwater or contaminated water off the outside.

If it was saltwater, rinse the exterior of the phone with distilled water (bottled drinking water works in a pinch). Saltwater leaves crystallized residue that corrodes everything it touches. A 30-second rinse removes the visible salt and slows the chemistry. Yes, you're adding more water. That's fine, plain water is dramatically less destructive than salt or sewage water.

Step 4: Shake out as much liquid as you safely can.

Hold the phone with the ports facing down and gently shake to drain ports and speaker grilles. Don't shake violently. You're just trying to clear standing water from openings, not pressurize anything.

Step 5: Wrap loosely in a clean dry cloth or paper towel and call a lab.

Critical: If the phone is still on, it is actively dying. Power it off before reading another word. Saltwater corroding a powered logic board can ruin an otherwise recoverable phone in under 10 minutes.

Why Saltwater and Sewage Are Worse Than Tap Water

People think water is water. It's not. The difference between tap and ocean is the difference between getting your shirt wet and getting it covered in spray-on rust.

Saltwater: Conductive and Corrosive

Ocean water is roughly 3.5% dissolved salt by weight. That salt dissociates into sodium and chloride ions, which conduct electricity. Inside an iPhone, that conductivity creates short circuits between traces that are supposed to be electrically isolated. The chloride ions are also chemically aggressive. They attack the copper traces, gold pads, and silicon pins on the logic board. Tap water carries trace minerals and dissolves chip coatings slowly. Saltwater attacks them in minutes.

Once the phone dries out, the salt doesn't leave. It crystallizes on the board. Every time humidity rises (a humid summer day, a steamy bathroom), the salt absorbs moisture and re-conducts. This is why a phone that survived an ocean dunk in the moment can suddenly die two weeks later.

Toilet Water: Biological and Chemical

Toilet water is mostly tap water but contaminated with whatever's in the bowl plus residual bleach or toilet-bowl cleaner. The biological contamination feeds bacterial growth on the logic board. The cleaning chemicals (bleach, ammonia, citric acid) are aggressive corrosives on their own. Add the bacteria, and you get a wet petri dish growing on $400 worth of chips.

Toilet water is bad but not as immediately destructive as saltwater. The bigger problem is the user delay. People are embarrassed about toilet drops. They wait. They rinse it once and put it in a drawer. By the time we see it, corrosion has been growing for a week.

Pool Water: Chlorinated and Loaded with Minerals

Swimming pools have chlorine plus calcium hardness plus stabilizers plus algae killers. Each one attacks circuit boards differently. Chlorine is a particularly aggressive oxidizer on copper traces. Saltwater pools are essentially seawater with added chlorine, basically the worst case.

Soda and Coffee: Sugar Plus Acid

Sweet drinks add a sticky residue (sugar) that becomes a glue-like film when it dries. The acid in soda (carbonic and phosphoric) etches metal. Coffee adds tannins. All of this creates a residue that's far harder to clean than plain water.

Tap Water: The Least Bad

Plain tap water has the lowest immediate impact. Most municipal water has minor mineral content. It still conducts electricity, but the corrosion is slow enough that a phone dunked in clean tap water and recovered within 24 hours often comes back fully functional. Toilet, Pool, Ocean, Soda: Damage Severity Compared

The biggest single factor in recoverability isn't whether the phone was on or off when it hit water. It's what kind of water and how long it sat. Here's the rough ranking we use in the lab.

Note: most "I dropped it in the toilet" cases are actually toilet water plus toilet cleaner residue. Almost no household toilet is just plain water. Cleaning chemistry varies but it pushes severity up.

What NOT to Do

Most "this water-damaged phone is now beyond saving" cases we see were salvageable when they happened, then ruined by well-meaning mistakes. Here's the short list.

Do NOT:
  • Put it in rice. Rice doesn't absorb water from inside a sealed phone. It does absorb water vapor at a slow rate, but only from the surface. Meanwhile, corrosion accelerates on the logic board. Rice is a myth. Apple's own guidance explicitly says no rice.
  • Use a hairdryer or oven. Heat drives water vapor deeper into chips and warps small plastic gaskets. It also melts adhesives.
  • Press the power button to "see if it works." Each button press tries to power circuits that are wet and short-circuited.
  • Plug it into a charger. Charging current through wet circuits is the single fastest way to permanently kill a wet iPhone.
  • Shake it violently. Mild draining shakes are fine. Throwing it around to "shake the water out" damages mechanical components.
  • Seal it in a plastic bag. This traps humidity against the device and accelerates internal corrosion.
  • Take it to a generic phone repair shop. Most local repair shops can replace a screen or battery but don't have ultrasonic cleaning equipment. A surface dry-out and reassembly is not water damage repair.
  • Let it "dry on the counter for a week." Drying is not cleaning. The salt or contamination is still on the board, eating it.

The Corrosion Clock: How Fast Damage Spreads

Here's a hard truth: every hour matters more than the previous one for liquid damage. Corrosion is an exponential process, not a linear one.

The good news: even at the 7-days-plus stage, data recovery is often still possible, just more expensive. The bad news: every additional day raises the cost and lowers the success rate. Get the phone to a lab as fast as you can.

Inside the Lab: Ultrasonic Cleaning

When a liquid-damaged iPhone arrives at MDrepairs, here's roughly what happens. The exact steps vary by model and severity, but the overall flow is consistent.

Initial Triage (Hour 1)

We open the device under ESD protection. We document the model, the storage size, and any visible corrosion or impact damage. We disconnect the battery first to make sure no parasitic current is flowing during disassembly. The logic board comes out for inspection under a stereo microscope. We photograph the current state so we have a baseline.

Disassembly and Pre-Cleaning

The board has shields, brackets, connectors, and at least one daughterboard. Each comes off carefully. Anything heavily contaminated gets a preliminary isopropyl alcohol (99%) rinse to flush gross debris off before ultrasonic. We separate components that are sensitive to ultrasonic cavitation (the speaker, the camera, the haptic engine) so they don't get pitted by the cleaning bath.

Ultrasonic Bath

The bare logic board goes into a heated ultrasonic cleaner with a fresh batch of 99% isopropyl alcohol. The ultrasonic transducers create microscopic cavitation bubbles in the liquid. Those bubbles collapse against the board surface, mechanically scrubbing every trace, every pad, every joint, even down inside BGA chip packages where no manual cleaning could reach. For saltwater, we usually do two passes: one with fresh distilled water to dissolve the salt, then alcohol to displace the water and dry the board. Each pass is 5 to 15 minutes depending on contamination level.

Microscope Inspection and Repair

After ultrasonic, we put the board back under the microscope. Most clean boards are good as new. If we see green oxide on traces (a common pattern from water damage that sat), we treat those areas with a brush and fiberglass pen. If the corrosion ate through a trace entirely, we use a thin enameled wire to bridge the broken path, called a "jumper." If a chip pin is rotted, we may have to remove the chip, clean its pads, and reflow it.

Test Boot and Data Extraction

The board goes back in a test fixture or back into a phone chassis with a known-good battery, screen, and ports. We power on. If the phone reaches the Apple logo and progresses, we extract the data partition using our recovery tools. If it doesn't boot, we go back to diagnostics on the board.

Final Repair or Chip-Off

If the board can't be revived to a bootable state but the NAND flash chip itself is healthy, we move to chip-level data extraction. This involves removing the NAND chip from the original board, reading it directly with our flash programmer, and pairing it with extracted encryption keys from the original CPU to make the data readable. Stopping the Next One

The frustrating truth is that even "water-resistant" iPhones can fail in water. IP68 means tested at controlled freshwater depth for short times. It doesn't mean "saltwater submersion is fine." Apple's warranty doesn't cover liquid damage at all.

Use a real waterproof case for water activities

If you're going to the beach, boating, or kayaking, use a real submersible case (Lifeproof, Pelican Marine, or a dry pouch). Apple's own rating assumes nothing is bent or aged. A six-month-old iPhone with a tiny case scratch may not survive what a new one would.

Turn off the phone before water exposure

If you know you're going somewhere wet, power off the phone. A powered-off phone can survive submersion better than a powered-on one because there's no active current to short.

Back up before vacation

The single best protection against losing your photos to water damage is having a current backup before you go. Settings > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Do it the day you leave. Our backup guide walks through doing this properly.

Don't carry it in a back pocket near toilets

The most common iPhone dunk we see is the back-pocket-into-the-toilet flip. Front pocket. Bag. Anywhere else. Just not back pocket.

Use AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss

AppleCare+ covers some liquid damage at a reduced rate. It does not cover the data. The data is your responsibility. But if you're going to drop a $1,200 phone in the toilet, the $99 service fee with AppleCare+ is dramatically better than buying a new phone outright.

Use Find My iPhone with phone activation

If you lose the phone in the ocean, Find My can help locate it before it sinks too deep. We've had clients call us after fishing their iPhone out of a tide pool after Find My pinged the last known location.

FAQ

My phone fell in the toilet but seems to work fine. Should I still be worried?

Yes. Corrosion from any non-pure water can sit dormant for days or weeks before causing failure. The phone is most rescue-able right now, while there's no failure yet, by ultrasonic cleaning. Many of the "it died two weeks after a toilet drop" cases we see were preventable if cleaned in the first 48 hours.

How does ocean saltwater compare to swimming pool water?

Ocean is worse. Saltwater pools are basically ocean water with chlorine added. Chlorinated freshwater pools are also bad, just less concentrated in salt. Both are far worse than tap. For triage, treat any pool drop like saltwater.

Will Apple help with a saltwater-damaged iPhone?

Apple's Genius Bar will offer a paid out-of-warranty service or replacement. They do not recover data and do not perform component-level repair. Apple's official liquid damage guidance recommends drying and contacting them, but their service path replaces the device with a refurbished one. Your data goes with the broken unit.

Can you recover photos if my iPhone has been sitting in a drawer for a month after a saltwater drop?

Often yes, but it's harder. The phone won't boot, the corrosion is severe, and we may need to do chip-off data recovery to extract from the NAND directly. Success rate around 30 to 50% depending on which chips on the board failed. Worth a free phone consult.

My iPhone has been in rice for three days. Is that bad?

Rice doesn't actively hurt the phone but it gives a false sense of security. The corrosion has been growing the whole time. The water that's still inside the phone is now even saltier as some of it evaporated and left mineral concentrate behind. Get it to a lab now.

Should I try to charge it before bringing it in?

No. This is the single most common cause of a salvageable phone becoming unsalvageable. Charging current through wet circuits creates short circuits that can fry chips instantly. Wait. Don't charge.

What about IP68 rated iPhones? Aren't they waterproof?

IP68 is a freshwater rating in controlled conditions. Saltwater is not freshwater. Older iPhones lose their water resistance as seals age. Apple does not cover liquid damage under warranty, IP68 rating notwithstanding. We see "waterproof" iPhones every week.

Can I open the phone myself to dry it out?

Only if you have proper tools, anti-static protection, and experience. Most people break ribbon cables or strip pentalobe screws. We have customers who have made things significantly worse by opening at home. Either bring it in unopened, or hand it to a professional.

How fast can you turn this around if I overnight it?

Most water damage cases take 3 to 5 business days from receipt to return. Rush options available. Critical: when you ship, do not power it on to "see if it still works" before packaging. Send wrapped in a dry cloth, in a padded box, with overnight tracking. Our shipping guide walks through this.
