Logical Recovery: $300 - $650
This is the cheapest category. The drive still works physically. It spins up, the computer can see it (or mostly see it), but the data itself is inaccessible. The drive doesn't need to go into a cleanroom for this. We connect it to our imaging systems, create a sector-by-sector clone, and then use professional tools to rebuild the filesystem and extract the data. Most logical recoveries take 1 to 3 days.
Why it's cheap: no parts needed, no cleanroom time, lower skill floor. But don't confuse "cheap" with "easy." Corrupted RAID arrays and partially overwritten filesystems can be genuinely complex.
Firmware Repair: $500 - $900
Your computer sees the drive. It might even show the correct model number and capacity. But you can't access any data. The drive just hangs or throws errors whenever you try to open it.

We have two approaches depending on the situation. Sometimes we can free a stuck motor. Other times we need to transplant the platters from the failed drive into a donor drive with a working motor. Platter transplants are delicate work. The platters have to stay in perfect alignment, and a single dust particle can cause scratches.

This is the expensive one. And honestly, the hardest one. Scratched platters mean data has been physically destroyed in the scratched areas. There's no recovering data from a scratch. What we can do is recover everything that isn't damaged.

Encrypted WD Drives: Add $200 - $500
Western Digital has been shipping drives with hardware-level encryption since around 2010. Every My Passport, My Book, and Elements drive made in the last decade has it. The data on the platters is encrypted, and the decryption key lives on the drive's PCB (circuit board).
This means that even after we fix whatever mechanical or firmware issue the drive has, we still need to deal with the encryption layer. If the original PCB is intact, it's straightforward. If the PCB is damaged, we need to extract the encryption key and apply it during the data extraction phase.
