GoPro SD Card Error: Recovering Your Footage

Short answer: a GoPro flashing SD ERR or NO SD usually means the card's file system got hurt (an interrupted write, a fast card pushed past its limits, or a failing card), and the footage is very often still recoverable. The two rules that decide whether you keep it: do not tap "repair" or reformat when the camera offers, and stop recording to that card immediately. GoPro video also fragments across the card in interleaved chunks, so generic recovery apps frequently return "recovered" files that stutter or won't play; the footage needs video-aware reconstruction. There's a special flavor of gut-drop when the camera that rode through the whole trip shows SD ERR at the trailhead. The good news from the bench: cards that produce these errors usually still hold nearly everything, and the difference between full recovery and heartbreak is mostly about what happens in the next ten minutes. Here's the triage.

What the GoPro error messages actually mean

  • SD ERR: the camera can see a card but can't use it: corrupted file system, a write that got interrupted (battery died mid-recording, card pulled early), or a card whose controller is faltering.
  • NO SD: the camera can't detect the card at all: dirty or worn contacts, a counterfeit or dying card, or a card seated wrong.
  • The repair-file prompt: after an interrupted recording, GoPros offer to repair the last clip. On a healthy card this often works for that one clip. On a card already throwing SD ERR, letting the camera write repair data onto a corrupted file system is a gamble with the whole card's contents.
  • Endless "loading" or crashing when browsing clips: the file system index is damaged; the camera chokes trying to parse it.
The one-move rule: take the card out and don't let anything write to it. Not the camera's repair, not the camera's format, not Windows' "do you want to fix this device" offer, not a quick test recording "to see if it still works." Recovery odds on an SD card are set almost entirely by how little gets written after the failure. Every fix that writes can overwrite footage.

Why GoPro footage is harder to recover than photos

Here's the part most people learn only after a generic recovery app fails them. A photo is one small contiguous blob; nearly any tool can carve a JPEG out of a card. GoPro video is different in three compounding ways:

  • The files are huge, so a single clip's data almost never sits in one continuous run. The camera writes chapters and juggles space, leaving each clip scattered in fragments across the card.
  • MP4 needs its index. The playability of an MP4/MOV depends on a metadata structure that maps every frame's location. Interrupted recordings often die before that index is finalized, leaving gigabytes of real video data with no map.
  • Multiple streams interleave. Modern GoPros write video, audio, telemetry, and low-res proxy versions (LRV files) together, so the raw data on the card is a braid, not a ribbon.

Generic file-carving tools grab what looks like the start of a video and read forward, which on fragmented action-cam footage produces those classic corpses: a file the right size that plays 4 seconds and freezes, or shows green blocks and smeared motion. Proper recovery reassembles clips fragment by fragment and rebuilds or synthesizes the index so players can actually decode the stream. That's specialist work, and it's the difference between "we found files" and "you can watch your trip."

The safe DIY path (healthy card, replaceable footage)

If the card reads on a computer and the footage would be sad-but-survivable to lose, DIY is reasonable:

  • Use a proper card reader, not the camera over USB; the camera is another chance for writes.
  • Image the card first if you can: a full sector-by-sector copy to your computer means all recovery attempts run against the copy, and the card itself is never touched again. This one habit converts most DIY horror stories into non-events.
  • Run recovery software against the image, ideally something with video reconstruction features rather than a generic undeleter. Expect mixed results on fragmented clips; complete short clips fare best.
  • Check results honestly: play recovered clips through, not just the first seconds. Partial recoveries hide their damage in the middle.
LRV bonus: GoPros record low-resolution proxy versions of clips (LRV files) alongside the main video. Recovery tools sometimes rescue an intact LRV even when the 4K original is too fragmented. Low-res footage of the once-ever moment beats no footage; don't delete the "weird small files" a scan returns.

When it's a lab job

  • The card doesn't appear on a computer at all, shows 0 bytes, or wrong capacity: the card's own controller is failing, and continued read attempts stress it. Physical/electronic card failures need chip-level work; we recover these by reading the memory chips directly when necessary.
  • The footage is irreplaceable. Wedding, once-in-a-lifetime trip, someone who's gone. First attempts have the best odds, and you only get one first attempt.
  • DIY tools returned unplayable files. That's the fragmentation problem above; it needs reconstruction, not another scan with a different app. (Bring the card, not just the broken outputs.)
  • The card took physical damage: snapped, crushed, salt water. One of the more memorable cards on our bench came from a scuba diver who found it underwater, filmed its rescue, and sent it in; physical cases like that are exactly where lab tooling earns its keep.

Don't fix the card first; rescue the footage first. Remove the card, read it on a computer with a card reader, and copy or image everything it will give you. Only after the footage is safe (or professionally recovered) should you repair or reformat the card, and at that point the camera's own format function is the right tool. Fixing before rescuing is the order that loses footage, because every repair writes to the card.

Does the GoPro repair-file prompt delete footage?

It's designed to finalize the last interrupted clip, and on an otherwise healthy card it usually does just that. The risk case is a card with real file system corruption (recurring SD ERR): repair writes into a damaged structure, and a wrong write there can strand other clips. If the card holds anything precious beyond the last clip, decline the prompt and image the card first.

Why do my recovered GoPro videos not play?

Because GoPro clips are large, fragmented, and depend on an index that maps every frame. Generic recovery tools carve contiguous data, which reassembles fragmented video wrong (or grabs video with no index at all), producing right-sized files that stutter, freeze, or show corruption. The data is usually still on the card; it needs video-aware reconstruction that reassembles fragments and rebuilds the index. Can footage be recovered from a physically damaged or dead SD card?

Very often, yes. When a card's controller dies or the card is physically damaged, the memory chips inside usually still hold the data. Just don't force a damaged card into readers repeatedly; each hot connection risks the wounded electronics.

Should I format the SD card after recovering my videos?

Yes, once you've verified every recovered clip plays and lives in two safe places. Format it in the GoPro itself, then record a couple of disposable test clips, fill a few gigabytes, and play them back. If the card throws any error during that shakedown, retire it.
