What arrived at the lab

The drive arrived at our Lincroft, New Jersey lab from Ohio after a fall. The reported symptom was clicking on power-up, which is one of the signs we treat carefully because a hard drive is a mechanical device, not just storage media. We photographed and logged the intake, kept the history with the ticket, and handled it as a dropped hard drive with possible internal damage.

Bench work on the dropped hard drive

We opened the case file on the bench, performed visual inspection under the scope, and tested the drive in a controlled recovery workflow instead of asking it to keep trying to boot. Clicking after a fall usually means the heads are no longer reading normally, or the drive is repeatedly seeking without getting the feedback it needs from the platters.

Drives that arrive like this usually do not benefit from software scans, operating system repair tools, or repeated power cycles. The usual suspects are mechanical stress, head damage, media contact, or firmware behavior caused by the failed read process. After the lab work stabilized the recovery path, we imaged the data to a healthy drive and worked from the image for verification.

What data recovered meant

Data recovered meant the customer’s files were copied out through our recovery workflow, then checked before return. We verified the recovered data from the lab side and prepared it for the customer on healthy media, so the clicking source drive was no longer the working copy.

If yours looks like this

Do not keep powering on a dropped clicking hard drive, and do not run repair software against it. Keep it unplugged, avoid opening it, and call 732-933-7717 if the files matter. Our 100 diagnostic is applied toward the recovery, with no data, no charge, and it answers everything before any decision.

Every case is different. Results depend on the physical condition of your device, so we never promise a percentage or a guaranteed outcome. Diagnosis is a flat $100, applied toward your recovery, and if there is no data recovered, there is no charge.
