What arrived at the lab

The external hard drive arrived from Alabama after a drop. When the box was opened, the reported symptoms were treated as serious mechanical warning signs: unusual noise and a drive that was not spinning normally. We photographed and logged the device at intake, then kept power-on handling controlled because noisy hard drives can get worse each time they are started.

Bench Work On The External Hard Drive

We inspected the external hard drive visually and under the scope, then tested only as far as was needed to avoid adding stress. Dropped hard drives that arrive like this usually raise concern for internal mechanical damage, unstable heads, media contact, or a seized or dragging spindle. The unusual noise mattered because it meant the drive should not be treated like a normal USB storage problem.

From there, the lab path stayed focused on recovery instead of repair for reuse. We handled the drive through our hard drive process, cleaned when contamination or liquid exposure required it, stabilized what could be safely stabilized, and imaged the recoverable media to a healthy drive. The goal was not to make the external drive trustworthy again. The goal was to get the data off without making the original drive do unnecessary work.

The Recovery Result

The outcome was data recovered. After imaging, we verified the recovered data before preparing it for return to the customer. For mail-in customers, recovered files are sent back on return media, with insured UPS shipping back anywhere in the US.

If yours looks like this

If a dropped external hard drive is making noise or not spinning normally, stop powering it on, do not run repair software, and do not keep reconnecting it to check. Package it carefully and call 732-933-7717. The 100 diagnostic answered what was recoverable, what the work involved, and the cost before any decision.

Every case is different. Results depend on the physical condition of your device, so we never promise a percentage or a guaranteed outcome. Diagnosis is a flat $100, applied toward your recovery, and if there is no data recovered, there is no charge.
