What arrived at the lab

The water-damaged storage device arrived from New Jersey and was handled as liquid-damage media as soon as the box was opened. We photographed it at intake, logged the customer-reported symptom as water damage, and kept the device off power until the bench inspection. Nothing about a wet storage device should be treated as routine until the device has been inspected under controlled lab conditions.

Bench work on the water-damaged storage device

We opened the device on the bench, inspected the accessible areas under the scope, and treated it through our liquid-damage workflow before any recovery attempt. For wet storage, the first job is not file browsing. It is stopping contamination from creating more damage, checking what can safely be tested, and preparing the media for controlled imaging to a healthy drive.

  • Devices that arrive like this usually have risk at connectors, boards, and exposed contact points.
  • The usual suspects are mineral residue, shorted areas, weak signals, and unstable reads after drying attempts.
  • We cleaned for liquid exposure, tested only after inspection, and imaged the device to lab media instead of working from the original.

The recovered result

The outcome was data recovered. After imaging, we verified the recovered data set before return and prepared the recovered files on healthy storage for the customer. The original damaged device was no longer the working copy, which is the point of the lab process: stabilize access, extract what can be read, and return the usable data safely.

If yours looks like this

If a storage device has been wet, do not plug it in, charge it, shake it, heat it, or keep retrying it. Keep it powered off and send it in before drying residue and corrosion get more time to work. MDRepairs is a family-run lab in Lincroft, NJ, with a flat 100 diagnostic applied toward recovery, and the diagnostic answers everything before any decision.

Every case is different. Results depend on the physical condition of your device, so we never promise a percentage or a guaranteed outcome. Diagnosis is a flat $100, applied toward your recovery, and if there is no data recovered, there is no charge.
