What arrived at the lab

The drive arrived at our Lincroft, NJ lab from California as a WD external hard drive that was making clicking noises. We photographed and logged the intake, kept the device protected, and treated it as a mechanical hard drive case from the start. Clicking is not a normal operating sound, so we did not power it casually or let it keep trying to read on its own.

Bench work on the WD external hard drive

We opened it on the bench, performed a visual inspection under the scope, and tested the drive through our lab process before attempting any file access. For hard drives that arrive like this, the usual suspects are internal read instability, head related trouble, media damage, firmware access problems, or a combination of issues that make normal USB access unsafe.

We handled the drive as a cleanroom recovery candidate, then imaged it to a healthy drive instead of working from the original. Drives that click usually need controlled reads, careful retry management, and a recovery path that avoids extra wear. Once the imaging work gave us a stable source to work from, we verified the recovered data from the image rather than pushing the original device further.

The recovery result

The outcome was data recovered. In practice, that meant we were able to verify recoverable files from the lab image and prepare the recovered data for return to the customer. For mail-in customers, recovered files go back on a healthy return drive with insured UPS 2nd Day Air shipping both ways anywhere in the US.

If yours looks like this

If your WD external hard drive is clicking, stop powering it on and do not run repair software. Keep the original drive as quiet as possible and call the lab at 732-933-7717. We charge a flat 100 diagnostic applied toward the recovery, with no data, no charge. The diagnostic answered everything before any decision.

Every case is different. Results depend on the physical condition of your device, so we never promise a percentage or a guaranteed outcome. Diagnosis is a flat $100, applied toward your recovery, and if there is no data recovered, there is no charge.
