What arrived at the lab

The Samsung external hard drive arrived at our Lincroft, New Jersey lab after being mailed in from New York. At intake, it was logged, photographed, and kept powered down because the reported symptom was clicking noises. A clicking hard drive can worsen quickly if it is allowed to keep cycling, so we treated it as a mechanical recovery candidate from the moment the box was opened.

Bench work on the Samsung external hard drive

We opened the case file, completed the visual inspection under the scope, and tested the drive only through lab equipment that let us control power and access behavior. For clicking Samsung external hard drives, the usual suspects are problems inside the hard drive itself, such as weak heads, media damage, or a fault that prevents the drive from reaching a stable ready state.

We did not keep trying normal plug-in access. Drives that arrive like this usually need cleanroom handling before any serious imaging attempt, because repeated clicking can turn a recoverable situation into a worse one. Once the drive could be handled safely, we imaged what it would read onto a healthy drive and worked from that copy for file-system review and verification.

What data recovered meant

The outcome was data recovered. After imaging, we verified the recovered file structure from the working copy and prepared the recovered data for return to the customer. For mail-in recoveries, recovered files are returned on separate healthy media, and the original device is not used as the return drive.

If yours looks like this

If a Samsung external hard drive starts clicking, stop powering it on, do not run repair software, and do not open the enclosure outside a lab. MDRepairs is a family-run data recovery lab in Lincroft, NJ with cleanroom and board-level micro-soldering work. The 100 diagnostic is applied toward recovery, and the diagnostic answers everything before any decision.

Every case is different. Results depend on the physical condition of your device, so we never promise a percentage or a guaranteed outcome. Diagnosis is a flat $100, applied toward your recovery, and if there is no data recovered, there is no charge.
