Why is my Samsung hard drive clicking and can the data be recovered?

What arrived at the lab

The Samsung hard drive arrived from California with clicking noises reported by the owner. When the box was opened, we treated it as a fragile mechanical recovery case, not a drive to keep powering up. We photographed the intake condition, logged the ticket, and kept the device isolated for bench review so the next step would be controlled testing instead of repeated startup attempts.

Bench work on the Samsung hard drive

We opened the Samsung hard drive on the bench, completed a visual inspection under the scope, and tested it through our normal hard drive intake path. Clicking drives usually point to a mechanical or firmware level problem, and the usual suspects are damaged heads, media trouble, or a drive that cannot finish its startup routine. We did not treat the click as something software could fix.

Once the drive was stable enough for controlled work, we imaged it to a healthy drive instead of working from the original media. That imaging step protected the source while we handled unreadable areas carefully. After imaging, we verified the recovered data structure and checked that the recovery was usable before preparing the return media.

Data recovered meant the customer’s files were copied off the failing Samsung hard drive and verified from the recovery image, not from the unstable original. After verification, the recovered data was prepared on healthy return media and sent back through our normal insured mail-in workflow.
