Can data be recovered from a physically damaged microSD card?

What arrived at the lab

The microSD card arrived at our Lincroft, New Jersey lab after being shipped in from Idaho. The ticket described physical damage, so we treated it as a fragile flash case from the moment the box was opened. We photographed and logged the media at intake, kept the card isolated from unnecessary handling, and moved it to the bench for inspection under the microscope.

Bench work on the microSD card

We opened the case file, matched the microSD card to the intake photos, and inspected it under the scope before any recovery attempt. For physically damaged flash media, the usual suspects are cracked packaging, stressed solder joints, damaged contact pads, or internal NAND access problems. Those possibilities guide the workflow, but they do not get stated as facts until the media proves them on the bench.

We tested the card in a controlled way, cleaned only where contamination or handling residue would interfere with contact, and worked toward a stable read path. Once the media could be accessed well enough for recovery work, we imaged it to a healthy drive and kept the original card out of the normal file-review path. That image became the working copy for verification.

What data recovered meant

The outcome was Data recovered. In practice, that meant we verified the recovered file set from the image, prepared it on healthy return media, and sent the recovered data back to the customer. The original damaged microSD card remained separate from the recovered copy.
