What arrived at the lab

The Seagate external hard drive arrived from Washington with clicking noises reported by the owner. We photographed and logged the device at intake, then opened the box at our Lincroft, New Jersey lab. A clicking hard drive was treated as unstable from the start, so we did not handle it like a normal external drive or ask it to mount for browsing.

Bench work on the Seagate external hard drive

We completed the standard hard drive path in the lab. The enclosure and drive were visually inspected under the scope, the board and connectors were checked, and the device was tested only in a controlled way. For clicking hard drives, the goal was to protect the media and avoid repeated power cycling while we prepared the safest route to image the drive to healthy storage.

Drives that arrive like this usually point to mechanical or media related trouble rather than a simple cable issue. The usual suspects are weak heads, surface damage, firmware trouble, or a drive that can no longer read consistently. We handled the case through board-level and cleanroom capable procedures, then imaged what could be read to a healthy drive and verified the recovered data set before release.

The recovery result

The outcome was data recovered. In practice, that meant the recovered files were copied off the failing Seagate external hard drive, checked for usability, and prepared on return media for the customer. Once verification was complete, the recovered data was sent back through the mail-in workflow.

If yours looks like this

If your Seagate external hard drive is clicking, power it off and do not keep trying new cables, docks, freezer tricks, or repair utilities. Mail-in customers can use free UPS shipping both ways, insured, anywhere in the US. Our flat 100 diagnostic is applied toward the recovery, and the diagnostic answered everything before any decision.

Every case is different. Results depend on the physical condition of your device, so we never promise a percentage or a guaranteed outcome. Diagnosis is a flat $100, applied toward your recovery, and if there is no data recovered, there is no charge.
