Can a liquid damaged iPhone get its data recovered?

What arrived at the lab

The iPhone shipped to our Lincroft, New Jersey lab from Alabama after liquid damage. We photographed and logged the phone at intake, then opened it on the bench for visual inspection under the scope. The request was straightforward: recover the owner’s data if the phone could be stabilized enough to communicate normally again.

Bench work on the iPhone

We tested the iPhone at the board level, cleaned it for liquid exposure, and worked through the normal phone recovery path used in our lab. For iPhones, the storage is encrypted and paired to the original board, so recovery meant repairing this board until it could boot. We never bypass or crack passcodes. Once the phone was stable, the owner’s passcode was what allowed access to the data.
