Can data be recovered from a physically damaged Intel USB flash drive?

What arrived at the lab

The Intel USB flash drive arrived at our Lincroft, NJ lab from Michigan with physical damage listed on the ticket. When the box was opened, we photographed the drive, logged the case, and kept it off normal USB power. A physically damaged flash drive can get worse when it is flexed or repeatedly plugged in, so we treated it as a bench case from intake.

We opened the Intel USB flash drive on the bench and inspected it under the scope before any recovery attempt. We tested only through controlled lab equipment, checked the visible board area, and cleaned where contamination would interfere with safe handling. From there, we worked toward imaging the flash contents to a healthy drive so the original media was not used as the working copy.

Drives that arrive like this usually point to board stress, cracked solder joints, damaged USB contacts, or impact around the controller and memory package. The usual suspects are mechanical interruption before the flash memory itself, but that has to be treated carefully because forcing power through a damaged USB path can make a recoverable drive much harder to work with.

What the recovery result meant

The outcome was data recovered. After imaging to healthy media, we verified the recovered files from the lab copy rather than asking the damaged Intel drive to keep working. The recovered data was prepared for return to the customer through our normal mail-in recovery process.
