What arrived at the lab

The WD hard drive arrived at our Lincroft, NJ lab after shipping in from California. The reported problem was clicking noises, so we treated it as a mechanical hard drive case from the moment the box was opened. We photographed and logged the device at intake, kept the customer record tied to the drive, and moved it into the normal bench path for a clicking HDD.

Bench work on the WD hard drive

We opened the case record on the bench, gave the WD hard drive a visual inspection under the scope, and tested it with the same controlled process we use for hard drives that arrive with clicking symptoms. Clicking drives that arrive like this usually point toward the head stack, platter surface condition, firmware behavior, or a related mechanical read problem. The usual suspects are handled cautiously because repeated power cycles can make a recoverable drive worse.

  • We inspected the drive externally and under the scope before deeper testing.
  • We kept the work focused on stabilizing the media, not forcing the drive to mount normally.
  • We imaged the readable areas to a healthy drive and worked from the image instead of the failing original.

The recovered result

The outcome was data recovered. After imaging, we verified the recovered data set before preparing return media for the customer. For mail-in cases, recovered files go back on a healthy device and ship back to the customer, with the original handled according to the case record and customer direction.

If yours looks like this

If your WD hard drive is clicking, stop powering it on and do not run repair software against the failing device. Keep it still, avoid opening it outside a cleanroom, and call 732-933-7717 if the data matters. Our flat 100 diagnostic is applied toward the recovery, and that diagnostic answers everything before any decision.

Every case is different. Results depend on the physical condition of your device, so we never promise a percentage or a guaranteed outcome. Diagnosis is a flat $100, applied toward your recovery, and if there is no data recovered, there is no charge.
